Announcing the Finalists for the 2025 Global Energy Prize



The Global Energy Association recently unveiled the shortlist for the 2025 Global Energy Prize, showcasing innovative work from 15 scientists hailing from eight different countries, namely Australia, Chile, China, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA. This announcement marks the conclusion of the second stage in the nomination process for this prestigious award.

The nomination cycle for this year began on January 1, 2025, and ended on April 20, 2025, receiving a remarkable number of 90 nominations from 44 nations and territories. Each submission was meticulously reviewed based on criteria such as scientific novelty, practical impact, and implementation feasibility. Out of numerous applications, five outstanding projects that garnered the highest average scores were chosen as finalists in each category, addressing current energy challenges while demonstrating potential for widespread application.

In the words of Rae Kwon Chung, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the Chairman of the International Award Committee, "These projects address the current energy challenges and have the potential for widespread application. It is also important that the award remains a platform where science transcends borders and brings researchers together for a sustainable future." His statement highlights the global collaboration essential for tackling today's energy issues.

The shortlist is divided into three main categories — Traditional Energy, Non-Traditional Energy, and New Ways of Energy Application, each featuring remarkable innovators:

Traditional Energy Nominees:


1. Pietro Barabaschi (Italy) - Director, ITER
2. Jinliang He (China) - Professor, Tsinghua University
3. Valery Chuyanov (Russia)
4. Shu-Yuen Ron Hui (China) - Professor, City University of Hong Kong
5. Dmitry Zverev (Russia) - Director, Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau

Non-Traditional Energy Nominees:


1. Yu Huang (USA) - Professor, UCLA
2. Issa Batarseh (USA) - Professor, UCF
3. Mehdi Seyedmahmoudian (Australia) - Professor, Swinburne
4. Wanlin Guo (China) - Laboratory Head, NUAA

New Ways of Energy Application Nominees:

The winners, who will be awarded for their groundbreaking contributions to energy science, are scheduled to be announced in July 2025. A formal award ceremony is set to take place in October 2025, celebrating the essential role of scientific advancement in achieving a sustainable energy future.
