MHIET Unveils the SGP M450: A Step Towards Sustainable Energy
On July 4, 2025, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger, Ltd. (MHIET), a part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, announced the launch of its groundbreaking 450kW gas cogeneration system known as the SGP M450. This innovative system, developed in collaboration with Toho Gas Co., Ltd., supports hydrogen co-firing capabilities of up to 15% by volume, marking a significant advancement in energy efficiency and sustainability.
Development Process and Functionalities
The SGP M450 integrates cutting-edge technologies derived from the gas engine GS6R2, which initially operated solely on city gas. Through extensive modifications to fuel gas systems and engine control mechanisms, MHIET and Toho Gas successfully engineered an engine capable of safely and efficiently utilizing hydrogen-blended gas.
In a rigorous testing program conducted at Toho Gas's technical research facility in Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture, the team completed over 500 hours of comprehensive operational trials. These tests were crucial for verifying the reliability of the hydrogen mixture during engine operation and assessing its potential for reducing CO2 emissions.
The testing regime included simulations of various demand scenarios to explore the engine’s high adaptability and stable operational performance across different load conditions. Importantly, the tests confirmed that the hydrogen co-firing operation maintains the same level of functionality as in pure city gas mode, thus mitigating risks of abnormal combustion.
Flexible Operation Modes
The SGP M450 features two operational modes: the city gas exclusive mode and the hydrogen co-firing mode, allowing for seamless transitions during operation. The maximum hydrogen blend is intentionally set at 15% to minimize changes required from existing gas engine systems. When initiating operations, the engine begins solely with city gas, which is crucial for ensuring a robust response during power outages.
Another key product offering is the 'Hydrogen Ready' package aimed at customers considering future hydrogen utilization. This package begins as a city gas-only configuration but is designed with equipment and features needed for hydrogen co-firing already integrated. This foresight allows for shortened installation times when converting to hydrogen co-firing later, facilitating a smoother transition to sustainable energy practices.
Contribution to Carbon Neutrality and Resilience
MHIET's introduction of the SGP M450 represents not only a major technological advancement but also a contribution towards achieving carbon neutrality in energy systems. As a decentralized energy resource, it is designed to enhance environmental sustainability while providing resilience against large-scale outages caused by natural disasters.
This cogeneration system is pivotal for reducing environmental impact through energy conservation and promotes the widespread adoption of decentralized power sources. MHIET continues to drive the expansion of hydrogen technologies and decentralized power solutions, reinforcing their commitment to building resilient infrastructure that can withstand emergencies and support quick recovery efforts.
With an ongoing dedication to harnessing hydrogen for energy generation, MHIET is paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future, aligning with global efforts to foster low-carbon and decarbonized societies.
