About the Plays

'Mother's Eyelid'

Hasegawa’s 'Mother’s Eyelid' deeply explores the theme of maternal love and longing. It narrates the story of Chutaro Banba, who embarks on a journey across Edo in search of his mother, whose name and face remain unknown to him. His quest leads him to an eatery run by an innkeeper named Ohama, who hints that her son is in the Gosu region. This revelation brings Chutaro an excitement he cannot resist, prompting him to visit, but the journey holds unexpected surprises.

'Snow Moon Flower'

Accompanying 'Mother’s Eyelid' is 'Snow Moon Flower', which promises an exceptional display of sword fighting, dance, and song. The performance brings to life the stunning scenery of snow, the memories marked by the moon, and the vibrant visuals associated with flower settings – showcasing the talent of the Young Lion's Society. This immersive experience guarantees to capture the hearts of the audience, making for a truly memorable theatrical production.

The Young Lion's Society

The Young Lion's Society was formed in October of 1987, after the dissolution of the New National Theatre troupe. A group of seasoned members set out with a vision to continue showcasing original productions as well as the iconic classics of the New National Theatre. The society strives to bridge the traditional and contemporary landscape of Japanese theatre, all while promoting the intricacies of the human experience, embodying the motto of preserving the old while embracing the new.
