Seaspan and Maersk Launch Strategic Modernization for Fleet Efficiency Improvement
Seaspan and Maersk Enhance Fleet Efficiency with Strategic Vessel Modernization Program
SINGAPORE — July 8, 2026 — Seaspan Corporation Pte. Ltd. has announced a strengthened strategic collaboration with A.P. Moller - Maersk, the global leader in integrated logistics and container shipping. This partnership aims to improve the efficiency of their long-term time-chartered fleet, emphasizing both sustainable practices and operational excellence.
After two decades of reliable partnership, Seaspan and Maersk are moving forward with an extensive efficiency program for 18 of Maersk's long-term chartered vessels. This initiative focuses on significant enhancements in fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, operational flexibility, and emissions reduction.
One of the key initiatives developed by the partners is a set of high-impact modernization solutions for four of their 13,000 TEU vessels. This undertaking represents a major refurbishment program within their shared time-charter fleet. The modernization involves the installation of an axle generator aimed at reducing auxiliary engine fuel consumption, optimizing main engine performance, installing a new high-efficiency propeller, and utilizing a pre-swirl device to enhance propulsion efficiency. Additionally, the vessels are being prepared for future carbon capture compliance to meet upcoming emission regulations. Moreover, the operational bridge will be raised to increase cargo capacity, while deadweight is also being increased to improve load capabilities.
These modernization measures are anticipated to enhance vessel occupancy costs by approximately 10% to 13% while optimizing fuel efficiency, operational performance, and regulatory compliance. To date, the total investments committed to modernizing the fleet of 18 vessels, including both completed and planned initiatives, amount to approximately $75 million. Further projects are underway to drive decarbonization and performance improvement.
In tandem with this initiative, WattSpan, Seaspan's strategic partner in a joint venture focused on maritime technology and engineering solutions, has teamed up with Maersk and the COSCO shipyard to sign a non-binding Memorandum of Cooperation. This memo establishes a framework for a year-long collaboration centered around vessel modernization, energy efficiency improvements, and maritime decarbonization technologies. The initiatives will encompass, among others, cooperative development, data sharing, and execution of future projects under independent commercial agreements.
“This alliance reflects the type of practical and high-impact collaboration necessary to drive decarbonization throughout the maritime industry,” stated Dimitrios Panagopoulos, Fleet Operations Director at Seaspan. “By working closely with Maersk, WattSpan, and COSCO, we combine technical expertise, operational knowledge, and long-term investment to enhance vessel performance today, while preparing our fleet for future fuels and technologies. It's a clear example of how trusted partnerships can achieve significant large-scale advancements.”
Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering and Newbuilding at Maersk, added, “For many years, Seaspan has been a valuable partner and a significant tonnage provider for our fleet. Our goal, in working closely with Seaspan, is to implement ship enhancements that reduce fuel costs, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and increase cargo capacity, all of which enhances the competitiveness of our fleet.”
