Reinforcing Disaster Preparedness: AreaNo's Phase-Free Toilet Trailer in Higashi-Izu
In a remarkable step toward enhancing community safety and hygiene during disasters, AreaNo Co., Ltd. has delivered a
Phase-Free certified disaster-resistant toilet trailer to
Higashi-Izu Town in Shizuoka Prefecture on
March 5, 2026. This significant project was celebrated with a ceremony attended by the town's mayor and vice mayor at the
Atsukawa Shio Kaze Plaza.
Background of Installation
The increasing frequency of
natural disasters, including colossal earthquakes, has highlighted the crucial need for reliable sanitary facilities in evacuation settings. Recognizing this challenge, Higashi-Izu Town has proactively employed the
Cabinet Office’s funding initiative for enhancing local economies and living environments to procure the toilet trailer from AreaNo, selected through a public proposal process for the
2025 Disaster Toilet Trailer Purchase.
The trailer will initially serve as a
public restroom at the Atsukawa Shio Kaze Plaza, a central tourism hub in Higashi-Izu. However, in the event of a disaster, it is designed to be swiftly relocated to local evacuation centers or impacted areas, thereby functioning effectively as a
Phase-Free disaster response facility.
Features of the Super Water-Saving Toilet Trailer
This revolutionary toilet trailer is built on the concept of blending
comfort, mobility, and disaster responsiveness. It eradicates the division between normal and emergency scenarios, providing a sanitary environment at all times. Key specifications include:
Phase-Free System
The design allows for easy transition between being linked to the municipal water supply for regular use and switching to a
simple tank system during emergencies. Notably, it incorporates a
recycling hand-washing device that uses just
10 liters of water for approximately
200 uses, ensuring hygiene in water-scarce situations.
Exceptional Water Conservation
The trailer is equipped with the cutting-edge
Shatre-style toilet recognized by the
National Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It utilizes a mere
1.0 to 1.5 liters of water per flush, achieving around a
90% reduction compared to standard toilets. Moreover, even when operational on tank water, it supports up to
500 uses continuously.
Universal Design for Accessibility
Thoughtfully designed using durable and sanitary materials that are
odorless, slip-resistant, and anti-viral, the trailer offers features such as a
heated washlet seat. Its user-friendly design caters to elders and children alike, ensuring safety and comfort for all.
Phase-Free Certification
The trailer's versatile operation, providing value both during regular and emergency conditions, has earned it
Phase-Free certification by the Phase-Free Association, acknowledging its dual-purpose design philosophy. More information about this certification can be found on their
website.
Future Directions
With the successful delivery of this first-of-its-kind Phase-Free certified toilet trailer, AreaNo aims to collaborate with municipalities and private enterprises across the country for broader adoption of this vital technology. The company is committed to improving daily living conditions and addressing sanitation challenges during disasters, ultimately contributing to the
resilience of local communities.
