Ryouga Inoue's Debut Solo Exhibition
From November 21, 2025, the talented young potter Ryouga Inoue will hold his first solo exhibition at the various folk craft shop, IEGNIM, located in Yoyogi Uehara, Tokyo. As the third generation of the esteemed Fumoto Kiln, which has been producing the traditional pottery of the Kumamoto region for over 400 years, Inoue aims to modernize the daily-use vessels we rely on, all while honoring his rich heritage.
At this much-anticipated exhibition, visitors can explore and purchase more than 350 unique pieces, including mugs, rice bowls, plates, small dishes, and chopstick rests. Each item is crafted with a blend of traditional techniques and contemporary sensibilities, ensuring these pieces are not just functional, but also artistic additions to any home.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Ryouga's lineage in ceramics runs deep. His grandfather, Mr. Taiaki Inoue, is the current president of the Japan Folk Crafts Association and a leading figure in the field of Kosai-yaki pottery. Following in the footsteps of his father, Mr. Naoyuki Inoue, who is known for his mastery of slipware and breaking traditional molds, Ryouga has always been surrounded by a legacy of artistic craftsmanship.
After graduating from junior college, Ryouga was determined to refine his skills further. He knocked on the door of the legendary Iwai Kiln and sought guidance from master potter Noriyuki Yamamoto, who initially turned him away. Undaunted, Ryouga persisted and eventually became his apprentice, dedicating two and a half years to the meticulous art of pottery. His return to Fumoto Kiln in 2024 marks not just a continuation of family tradition, but also the beginning of his own voice in the pottery world.
Bridging Tradition and Modernity
Throughout his journey, Ryouga has encountered the tensions and triumphs inherent in the traditional folk craft movement. Rather than being content with his inherited skills, he has actively sought to challenge and redefine his practice. His work is characterized by a strong core and a sense of gentleness typical of Generation Z, allowing him to engage contemporary audiences while staying true to the unique clay and glazing techniques of Kosai-yaki.
The pieces that will be featured in this exhibition embody a harmony between traditional attributes, such as the flying chisel marks and brush strokes, with fresh, modern design elements. Ryouga's ability to converse with the past while shaping a future is what sets him apart, making his artworks appealing not only to older generations but also resonating strongly with a younger demographic.
