Special Classes on Food Waste and Microplastics at a Tokyo Kindergarten
In a pioneering educational initiative, the Pal System Federation, headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has taken steps to address critical environmental issues by hosting special classes at Higashi Azabu Kindergarten in Tokyo's Minato Ward. Held on January 22 and February 19, 2026, these classes focused on important topics such as food waste and microplastics, aiming to instill awareness in young minds through interactive learning experiences.
A Focus on Educational Impact
The unique program was designed for a class of 15 five-year-old children, reinforcing the value of cooperative education amidst the backdrop of the UN-designated International Year of Cooperatives in 2025. The first session, titled "Let’s Chase Our Food," took place on January 22 and provided a deep dive into the journey of food from the table to its origins. The young participants explored how various individuals contribute to the food supply chain, from transport and processing to the production of raw materials.
After the indoor lecture, students were encouraged to take part in a hands-on activity. They moved outdoors to plant vegetable seeds in planters, fostering a sense of connection to the environment and the source of their food.
Understanding Plastic Pollution
The second class, held on February 19 under the theme "Understanding Plastics," introduced the children to the environmental impacts of plastic usage in daily life. The lesson highlighted the consequences of improper disposal, leading to the existence of microplastics. To illustrate this, the children participated in an experiential learning moment where they observed microplastics rising to the surface when sand from a beach was soaked in water. This visual demonstration allowed them to grasp the concept of pollution and its effects on natural ecosystems.
Collaborative Efforts Towards Sustainability
The initiative was a collaborative effort between the Workers Cooperative, which operates the kindergarten, and Pal System. With the aim of strengthening cooperative ties among organizations, this educational program reflects Pal System's commitment to contributing positively to society and the environment. The organization is led by Chairman Atsuyuki Shibusawa and operates with a significant member base across various regions, as reported at the end of March 2025.
Pal System serves over 1.76 million members, encompassing numerous regional cooperatives including those in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Yamanashi, Nagano, Gunma, Fukushima, Shizuoka, Niigata, and others.
