Successful Climate Challenge – Hainan Baoting Event in Paris

On June 26th, 2025, the Climate Challenge event was held successfully in Paris, France, commemorating two pivotal anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU), as well as the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. This significant gathering was co-hosted by the People's Government of Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County in Hainan Province, China, and the Ningyuan Institute of Climate and Sustainable Development, with strong support from climate leaders across both China and Europe and the Chinese Embassy in France.

The event brought together over 100 representatives from more than 80 institutions spanning both continents, culminating in the signing of six key cooperation projects aimed at fostering collaboration towards a sustainable future.

In a notable video address, Xie Zhenhua, China's first Special Envoy for Climate Change, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced climate action effectiveness and the importance of synergies across climate actions, health sectors, and marine protection. His address highlighted the critical importance of local action, national planning, as well as international cooperation in combating climate change. Additionally, he outlined suggestions for the Baoting Innovation Zone, focusing on mutual recognition of standards and sustainable finance.

Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation, showcased the significance of the Baoting Innovation Zone as a model for international collaboration. She praised Baoting's ambitious carbon-neutral development goal for 2040, expressing hope that other regions will draw inspiration from its experience.

Moreover, Guo Xiaolin, Minister-Counselor for Science and Technology at the Chinese Embassy in France, also made her mark at the event, discussing how the Climate Challenge leverages the Hainan Free Trade Port to augment connections with the European innovation ecosystem. She underscored essential areas such as green energy, smart agriculture, eco-tourism, and low-carbon technologies as focal points for future cooperative ventures.

The event featured presentations of shortlisted projects that underscored the essence of green innovation. Projects showcased at the event included a low-carbon health and wellness center, innovative materials for sustainable living, and integrated energy innovations from Copenhagen, all reflecting innovative thinking and practical outcomes from the China-Europe collaboration to tackle climate change.

As the project presentations commenced, they marked the start of a new chapter in ecological cooperation aimed at achieving low-carbon development. Agreements for climate and sustainable development cooperation were signed, laying a robust foundation for future collaborations in these critical sectors.

Overall, the successful conclusion of the Climate Challenge event signifies a crucial stride in fostering green and low-carbon cooperation between China and Europe. This initiative encourages broader participation from various institutions and projects, uniting diverse expertise to enhance global resilience to climate challenges. Together, they aim to construct a greener, low-carbon, and sustainable future for generations to come.
