Vanguard Renewables Launches New Facility for Food Waste Recycling in Wisconsin

Vanguard Renewables Opens River Falls Facility for Sustainable Food Waste Disposal

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Vanguard Renewables, a frontrunner in organics recycling and renewable energy efforts, has recently inaugurated a cutting-edge anaerobic digestion facility in River Falls, Wisconsin. This facility focuses on converting food waste from manufacturers, retailers, and processors into renewable natural gas (RNG), offering a sustainable solution to a significant environmental challenge.

As states like Wisconsin and Minnesota tighten regulations around organics management and packaging waste, the demand for effective recycling solutions has surged. Spurred by initiatives like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and stringent commercial organics diversion requirements, food and beverage businesses are increasingly seeking reliable partners for compliance and sustainability.

Kent Bartley, President of Organic Solutions at Vanguard, emphasized the company’s commitment to simplifying the recycling process for its clients. “We provide a comprehensive approach that not only meets the logistical demands but also enhances compliance through real-time data reporting,” he noted. This innovative model is particularly beneficial for companies looking to minimize their environmental footprint while adhering to regulatory requirements.

The newly established facility at Peterson Family Dairy, a fourth-generation farm in Pierce County, boasts the capacity to recycle up to 275 tons of food and beverage waste each day. This operation is anticipated to produce approximately 289,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas annually, enough energy to sustain around 53,000 homes and businesses each year. Notably, the RNG produced will be integral in powering AstraZeneca's U.S. research and manufacturing facilities, underscoring a shared commitment to reducing emissions.

Utilizing advanced anaerobic digestion technology, the River Falls facility turns food waste into usable energy, promoting a circular economy that benefits both businesses and the environment. This facility also includes state-of-the-art depackaging capabilities, accommodating various bulk and packaged products. It has already commenced the processing of over 50 discrete waste streams from more than 30 clients in the surrounding area.

This strategic expansion signifies Vanguard Renewables' growing presence in Wisconsin, following its establishment in Eden, which serves the Milwaukee sector. The River Falls site is now open to new clientele, eager to collaborate on sustainable waste management practices.
