KALiNA Power Partners with Crusoe for Sustainable AI Data Centres in Alberta

KALiNA Power Limited has made significant strides in the renewable energy sector through its recent collaboration with Crusoe. Announced on February 12, 2025, this partnership marks a groundbreaking initiative for the establishment of artificial intelligence data centres in Alberta, Canada, surrounded by near-zero-emissions natural gas power plants utilizing carbon capture and sequestration technology. This strategic plan aims to address both the growing demand for AI data processing capabilities and the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions.

The Framework Agreement will see Crusoe taking ownership and operational control of these AI Data Centres, benefiting from a reliable supply of power contractually secured through KALiNA's innovative Power-CCS plants. The arrangement guarantees stable cash flows over long periods, essential for the financial viability of each project. With KALiNA’s 170 MW plants already boasting the potential to generate significant power at a competitive price, the collaboration is set to exploit Alberta's unique energy landscape effectively.

Located strategically near key infrastructure such as electricity transmission lines, gas pipelines, and fibre optic cables, the initial projects are set to launch at three locations: Myers Energy Park, Alsike Energy Park, and the newly established Crossfield Energy Park. Additionally, KALiNA's ongoing efforts to explore further project sites bolster the potential for future expansions and the installation of additional power plants at these key locations.

The partnership anticipates that power agreements will span at least 15 years, targeting creditworthy counterparties, which is expected to provide KALiNA a solid foundation for financing future endeavors. Each Project Development Agreement (PDA) will provide detailed provisions, ensuring that the crucial interconnection infrastructure for both electricity and gas supply is adequately addressed, along with security payments necessary for their establishment.

Environmental studies have already been conducted at the initial project sites, with plans set to complete further assessments at the Crossfield site in 2025. KALiNA has filed self-supply and export applications with the Alberta Electric System Operator, indicating a robust commitment to sustainability while meeting the energy needs of Crusoe's AI data centres. Their business model adapts to include flexible power purchase arrangements, such as Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs), allowing for efficient energy management and procurement on a broader scale.
