Nordic Semiconductor Expands Its Cell IoT Leadership with Major Announcements at MWC 2026

Nordic Semiconductor's New Era in Cellular IoT

At the 2026 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Nordic Semiconductor, a world leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, has laid out its vision for the future of cellular IoT. The company unveiled an exciting expansion of its product lineup designed to meet the demands of emerging networking technologies and satellite communications necessary for billions of IoT devices around the globe.

Expanding the Portfolio

Nordic Semiconductor, renowned for its established nRF91 series, introduced two new product series that mark a significant shift towards more efficient, reliable, and scalable connectivity options. The nRF92 series aims to offer the smallest cellular solution with high integration and energy efficiency. This new series integrates a high-performance application MCU alongside Nordic’s ultra-low power edge AI through Axon NPU (Neural Processing Unit). Additional features include multi-constellation GNSS and Wi-Fi location capabilities, making it ideal for smart meters, trackers, tags, industrial sensors, and long-life battery devices. The nRF92 series is set to enter general availability by early 2027, with key customers already sampling prototypes.

Following this, the nRF93 series introduces a robust LTE Cat 1 bis solution, which is expected to provide improved performance benchmarks (10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink) while retaining Nordic's hallmark low power consumption and compact form factor. This series promises solutions optimized for asset tracking, gateways, fleet management systems, security devices, and advanced metering applications. The widespread availability of the nRF93M1 module is scheduled for mid-2026, with several major clients already in the product development phase.

The Enhanced nRF91 Series

Not to be overlooked, the established nRF91 series received substantial updates, including the nRF9151 module that now supports NTN satellite connectivity (GEO and LEO), vital for logistics, smart agriculture, energy management, and remote infrastructure tasks. This updated version is also equipped with sub-GHz backup connectivity to maintain operations when public networks are unavailable.

In response to market needs for quick and easy cellular connectivity, Nordic has launched the nRF91M1, a compact smart modem solution tailored for clients seeking a simple method for adding cellular capabilities. This modem offers an efficient low-power stack, AT command interface, and secure cloud integration—suitable for traditional host-modem architectures.

Preparing for 5G with eRedCap Technology

Nordic Semiconductor’s commitment to future-proofing its product offerings is evident with the introduction of 5G eRedCap capabilities, designed to extend the range of application possibilities further. Collaborating with top-tier clients, Nordic is strategically positioning itself for the next generation of ultra-low-power 5G solutions that expand the usability of IoT devices worldwide.

"We are building the next era of cellular IoT, extending our portfolio to provide developers with the most reliable, efficient, and scalable connectivity platform for billions of devices globally," noted Vegard Wollan, CEO of Nordic Semiconductor. This expansion marks a crucial moment in Nordic’s long-term strategy to dominate the ultra-low-power cellular landscape amidst ever-evolving network requirements.

Join Nordic at MWC and Embedded World 2026

To witness these innovations firsthand, attendees are invited to meet Nordic at the MWC 2026 in Hall 7, Booth 7B51 from March 2-6 and at Embedded World 2026, Nuremberg, Hall 4A, Booth 310 from March 10-12.

With this impressive lineup of products and technologies, Nordic Semiconductor proves its unwavering commitment to enhancing connectivity and advancing the future of the Internet of Things.
