Promoting Health Literacy Among Youth Through Corporate Learning Visits to Prevent Overdose and Proper Medication Use

Empowering Health Literacy in Youth: A Corporate Learning Initiative

In an effort to strengthen health literacy among the younger population, Shionogi Healthcare Co., Ltd., based in Osaka, Japan, has introduced an innovative corporate learning initiative aimed at high school students. The program focuses on educating students about the responsible use of medications and the serious issue of overdose prevention through engaging workshops and group activities.

With the increasing prevalence of medication misuse, especially among teenagers, Shionogi recognizes the need to address this pressing issue. The initiative serves as part of their broader commitment to promote responsible medication use while combating societal challenges posed by substance misuse. Recently, a group of 35 second-year students from Incheon Academy participated in this enriching experience that included discussions on the dangers of overdose.

During the sessions, the students were prompted to reflect on hypothetical scenarios, such as witnessing a friend suffering from an overdose. This exercise encouraged them to exchange ideas on potential actions they could take and the resources available for assistance, fostering an environment where they could explore preventive measures against substance misuse.

In addition to these learning visits, Shionogi has launched a six-month program encouraging students to devise concrete ideas on how to convey the proper use of over-the-counter medications to their peers. By promoting proactive thinking, they hope that students will be able to relate to and develop awareness campaigns that resonate with their generation, thereby enhancing health literacy within the youth community.

Student Feedback:

The reaction from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Comments such as, "I realized the dangers of using medication incorrectly" and "I want to have the courage to help my friends in need" were common themes during the feedback sessions. Teachers also noted the program's success, highlighting it as an excellent opportunity for students to consider societal issues personally and commending their active participation during group work.

Shionogi’s Commitment to Education

Shionogi Healthcare is dedicated to enabling consumers to utilize over-the-counter medications safely and effectively through various educational strategies and informative campaigns. They emphasize not only the correct selection and usage of medications but also prioritize providing resources to prevent misuse. By strengthening collaboration with pharmacists and medical professionals, Shionogi is working tirelessly to create a secure environment for medication usage.

This corporate learning program will consist of seven learning visits across the fiscal year 2025, engaging approximately 280 students by January.

Addressing the Overdose Crisis

Recent reports emphasize that over-the-counter medication overdoses among youth have escalated into a significant social concern, exacerbated by the expansion of social media. According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the rate of misuse among individuals aged 15 to 19 is alarmingly high, with approximately one in 68 reporting experiences with over-the-counter drug misuse. In light of these statistics, understanding the profound distinction: “When used properly, medication can be helpful; when misused, it poses serious risks” has never been more vital. It is imperative for the youth to acquire knowledge regarding proper medication use to protect themselves and their peers.

Future Initiatives

Going forward, Shionogi aims to continue its educational support directed at preventing medication misuse while expanding its collaborations with school pharmacists and offering more learning opportunities. They envision a partnership involving pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, drugstores, administrative bodies, and educational institutions, all aimed at nurturing the ability of young people to make informed decisions and take responsible actions regarding their health.
