A Revered Legacy: Koju's 450-Year Journey
Koju, established in 1575, is a prestigious fragrance house renowned for its dedication to incense craftsmanship. As a way to celebrate their 450th anniversary, they are set to release a distinctive line inspired by the scent culture of the Heian era. This special offering, called "Muku-sa no Takimono" or "Six Varieties of Incense," will be available in limited quantities starting April 18, 2025.
The Essence of Heian Culture
The Six Varieties of Incense consist of six meticulously crafted scents that represent the refined olfactory traditions of the Heian period: "Baika" (Plum Blossom), "Kayou" (Lotus Leaves), "Jijuu" (Chamberlain), "Kikuka" (Chrysanthemum), "Rakuyou" (Fallen Leaves), and "Kurobou" (Black Form). These fragrances are not just mere products; they reflect the complex preparation methods and ingredients documented in ancient texts like "Kushushusshou" and "Kohishou."
Authentic Craftsmanship
Working closely with historical records, Koju's fragrance artisans have recreated these scents using only the highest quality raw materials. The process is labor-intensive and traditional; the incense is crafted and then carefully aged in clay pots buried underground, allowing it to mature and develop depth. This attention to detail ensures that each piece is a true representation of the original Heian fragrances.
An Exclusive Experience
The Muku-sa fragrance set will be sold in limited quantities, with only 50 units of each variety available at prices ranging from 4,950 to 5,500 yen (including tax) for a pack of three incense balls. Each scent offers a unique experience:
- - Baika: A vibrant scent reminiscent of plum blossoms, featuring a mix of agarwood and cloves.
- - Kayou: A refreshing aroma, evoking the lightness of lotus flowers using sandalwood and agarwood.
- - Jijuu: A calming fragrance, resembling the gentle autumn breeze, blending agarwood with sweet herbs.
- - Kikuka: An earthy scent inspired by chrysanthemums, utilizing a combination of agarwood and unique spices.
- - Rakuyou: A delicate fragrance that captures the essence of falling leaves, crafted from agarwood and musk.
- - Kurobou: A profound and prestigious scent, rich in agarwood, musk, and cloves for a deep aroma.
A Rich Heritage
Koju’s legacy and expertise can be traced back to its founder, Yasuda Mataemon, a descendant of the Seiwa Genji clan, established during the early Tenshou period. Through the years, Koju has upheld its reputation by supplying incense to the Tokugawa family and the imperial court.
The fourth-generation owner of Koju was invited by Tokugawa Ieyasu to preserve the integrity of their craft, creating a legacy that thrives even today. The eighth-generation master, Takai Juemon, became renowned in the tea ceremony circles and meticulously documented the art of incense making in his treatise, ensuring that future generations would inherit this knowledge.
Continuing the Tradition
Today, under the umbrella of the Nippon Kodo Group, Koju continues to harmonize traditional techniques with contemporary sensibilities. With a variety of products ranging from incense to perfumes, the brand emphasizes the cultural aspects of scent in modern society. Stores in Kyoto, Ginza, Tokyo, and Urawa offer a glimpse into Japan's rich aromatic heritage.
Koju also hosts a unique workshop called "Za Koju" at their Ginza flagship store, where visitors can experience the art of incense making firsthand and deepen their appreciation of this timeless craft.
