An Insight into Haiyuza Theater's Upcoming Production
The Haiyuza Theater Company proudly presents
"War is... Vol. 31: Boy Overboard - A Boy Fell into the Sea!" from
August 7 to August 15, 2025, at the Haiyuza Studio, located in
Roppongi, Tokyo. This marks the Japanese premiere of
"Boy Overboard," a compelling work first performed by the Australian Youth Theatre in
2005. The play is part of a long-standing series that has been exploring themes of war and its ramifications for
31 years.
A Thematic Exploration of War
This year, alongside the
80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the series aims to highlight various social issues stemming from war, including
religion, gender, discrimination, and
refugees. The productions serve to spark critical discussions among audiences about the conflicts and challenges present in our society today.
The Story of Jamal and Bibi
"Boy Overboard" follows
Jamal, a young soccer player from
Afghanistan, who dreams of winning the
World Cup with the national team. His spirited sister,
Bibi, yearns to join her brothers in their games, despite societal norms prohibiting girls from playing outside without facial coverings. Their parents secretly educate Bibi, defying governmental bans on girls' education. However, their efforts lead to dire consequences when their home is bombed by the authorities. The family is forced to flee Afghanistan, but during their escape, Jamal and Bibi become separated from their parents. Jamal declares to Bibi,
“We’re going to Australia!” - but will their dream come true?
A Talented Cast
Under the direction of
Hanae Sugata, who has been with the series for a decade, this performance promises to be an inspiring and imaginative experience with live music enhancing the emotional weight of the story. The cast features
