Idemitsu Energy Solutions Innovates with Radi-Cool at Hakata Port Museum

Innovative Solutions for a Greener Future

Idemitsu Energy Solutions, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is taking a significant step towards sustainability by participating in a groundbreaking project in Fukuoka City. Together with Radi-Cool Japan, they will implement Radi-Cool, a revolutionary radiative cooling paint, at the Hakata Port Bayside Museum. This is the first time such technology is being applied to an outdoor public facility in any designated city across Japan.

Background of the Project

Fukuoka City has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the fiscal year 2040. As part of this ambitious goal, the city has developed the "Hakata Port Carbon Neutral Port Formation Plan," focusing on reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from both public and private facilities. The current project seeks to apply the Radi-Cool paint on the roof of the Hakata Port Bayside Museum to assess energy-saving effects and promote similar initiatives at other facilities in the future.

In this collaboration, Idemitsu will handle the collection and analysis of energy data as well as oversee all painting activities, while Radi-Cool Japan will supply the Radi-Cool paint and provide ongoing technical support throughout the project.

About the Radi-Cool Technology

The innovative Radi-Cool material was introduced to the world by a research team at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2017, having been published in the prestigious scientific journal, "Science." This unique compound merges existing technologies that reflect sunlight effectively with advanced radiative cooling capabilities. This dual-action approach prevents heat buildup on the surface while effectively dissipating it from the backside, resulting in improved energy efficiency without the need for additional energy consumption. It essentially creates a comfortable indoor environment while minimizing energy costs.

Types of Radi-Cool Products

Radi-Cool comes in various forms:
  • - Silver Film: Designed for commercial and industrial applications.
  • - Window Film: Ideal for residential use to improve energy efficiency.
  • - Paint: A versatile solution for various surfaces.
  • - Fabric: For applications requiring flexibility and adaptability.

Verification Data

Preliminary tests conducted by Nissan's Kyushu Branch showed promising results after the application of the Radi-Cool paint on their roofs, ensuring that the paint accomplishes its intended cooling effect.

Expected Timeline

The timeline for the project unfolds as follows:
  • - June-July 2025: Data collection and preparation for painting.
  • - July-August 2025: Painting operations covering a total area of 517 square meters across Building A and Building B roofs.
  • - September-October 2025: Measurement and data collection regarding the system's performance.
  • - November-December 2025: Compilation of an effectiveness report and presentation of findings to Fukuoka City officials.

Future Prospects

This project aims to use the insights gained to broaden the application of Radi-Cool technology across more public and private facilities in Fukuoka. Furthermore, the collaboration hopes to launch decarbonization solutions in partnership with local municipalities and corporations nationwide.
