Conscription laws have been enacted to address declining birth rates, and among the top aspirations for young girls today are to be a ‘mother’ or a ‘magical girl.’ The protagonist, Asako, is a high school student who belongs to the upper echelons of the school caste. Her ambition is to achieve a ‘happy marriage,’ a narrative that mirrors societal expectations.

Asako's journey transforms when she encounters a mysterious fairy named Hachibe, who presents her with the opportunity to become a magical girl tasked with defeating enigmatic foes known as 'villains.' But are these so-called villains truly what they seem? The play invites audiences to question the very concepts of good and evil, asking whether the shouts from the villain are in a misunderstood language, and if being part of the majority truly equates to being right. Provoking debates around what constitutes moral wrongdoing, the performance challenges viewers to contemplate uncomfortable truths regarding discrimination and identity.

About the Theatre Company

Founded in 2012 by students from Osaka University of Arts, Hamidashi Botti has since relocated its activities to Tokyo.
