The 'Book Activist' Exhibition by Irma Boom
From June 5 to August 23, 2026, ATELIER MUJI GINZA in Tokyo will host the special exhibition titled "Book Activist," featuring the renowned Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom. This event marks the 10th anniversary of MUJI BOOKS, a division of MUJI that has promoted a life enriched by books, encapsulated in the motto "Always good words."
The Essence of Paper Books
Since its inception in 2015, MUJI BOOKS has aimed to highlight the unique charm of physical books. Unlike fleeting digital information, traditional paper books are tangible objects that enhance spaces and carry depth, offering a different experience. This exhibition seeks to celebrate not only the aesthetic beauty of books but also their cultural significance over time.
In collaboration with Irma Boom, the exhibition will showcase her latest book, "Book Activist," which salutes everyone involved in the creation and dissemination of books—readers, sellers, deliverers, binders, printers, and writers alike. With a portfolio of over 500 books spanning nearly four decades, Boom’s work provides diverse perspectives on the role of paper books in our lives. The book is a compact yet dense volume, designed to metaphorically fit into the palm of your hand and packed with rich insights.
A Fusion of Creativity and Functionality
Irma Boom has a history of collaborating with various institutions worldwide, crafting unique publications that distill essential information into the form of physical books. Her design philosophy mirrors MUJI’s approach to product creation—careful selection of materials and processes aligned with fulfilling necessary functions. Through this exhibition, visitors will be invited to rediscover the value and potential of paper books in our increasingly digital world, fostering a dialogue around how we can continue to integrate "good words" into our daily lives.
Unique Exhibit Features
The exhibition will be the first of its kind in Asia to showcase an array of Boom's unparalleled book designs alongside illustrious pieces from prominent collections, including those from MoMA and the Centre Pompidou. Attendees can look forward to viewing handmade miniature models and an exclusive paper known as "IBO paper," developed in collaboration with a paper company. Additionally, selected quotes from books that embody continuous good words will be presented, inspiring visitors throughout their experience.
