Breakthrough T1D Recognizes Volunteer Leaders at Annual Conference
On February 11, 2025, Breakthrough T1D, previously known as JDRF, held its annual One Conference in New York, where it feted seven remarkable volunteers who have significantly advanced the organization's mission. Named after the founding couple of Breakthrough T1D, the Carol and Erwin Lurie Award recognizes a volunteer vital to advancing the mission. Amis, whose son was diagnosed with T1D, has shown extraordinary leadership in fundraising and supporting families newly diagnosed with the disease. As chair of the Southern Texas Chapter's gala, she played a pivotal role in raising extensive funds to support the organization’s initiatives.
Dayton Coles - Dr. Gerald Fishbone Award
Coles received this award for his long-term dedication to Breakthrough T1D. His involvement began after his daughter's diagnosis nearly five decades ago. He has held various leadership roles, including on the International Board of Directors and in research committees, championing initiatives that promote research funding and community awareness.
Natalie Stanback - Huntsman Family Community Engagement Award
Stanback’s leadership within her local community began after her family's diagnosis journey with T1D. Serving on the board of her chapter and leading the DEIB Committee, her advocacy extends to the national level, having testified before the U.S. Senate, emphasizing the need for enhanced diabetes research funding.
Joseph P. Lacher, Jr. - Jim Tyree Award
For his impactful leadership during the pandemic and his prior service as Illinois Chapter Board President, Lacher was recognized with the Jim Tyree Award. His actions during challenging times helped maintain momentum for the organization, securing significant fundraising achievements and guiding strategic initiatives.
Shelley and Doug Lowenstein - John Brady Award for Innovation
This couple's journey began when their daughter was diagnosed with T1D. They are credited with fostering innovative practices and developments within the organization, including successful national campaigns advocating for improvements in diabetes technologies and engaging directly in research initiatives.
Carol Oxenreiter - Mary Tyler Moore Award
As a recognized leader in the fight against T1D and a founding member of the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative, Oxenreiter’s extensive volunteer work has demonstrated her commitment to impactful advocacy and education within the T1D community.
