Open House Group's Role in Shaping the Future of Gunma Insect Forest
Open House Group, based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has recently been appointed to the committee of the "Gunma Insect Forest Future Project". This initiative aims to formulate a forward-thinking plan for the Gunma Insect Forest, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in August 2025. The forest is a prominent educational facility in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, focused on the theme of insects, and is recognized as the largest insect observation venue in Japan.
The committee, composed of various experts, aims for the Gunma Insect Forest to not only be a beloved facility by local residents and visitors but also to serve as a model for similar institutions across the nation for the next 100 years. The first meeting took place on July 4, 2025, and was attended by Gunma Prefectural Governor Ichita Yamamoto, who acknowledged the importance of this initiative in enhancing the forest's appeal.
Since 2021, Open House Group has conducted annual forest conservation activities at the "Open House Forest", which is located within the Gunma Insect Forest. Recognizing their responsibility in addressing forest conservation challenges, the group has established a partnership with local governmental bodies, including the Kiryu Forest Office and the Gunma Insect Forest, to engage in meaningful activities aimed at preserving the environment.
Last year's conservation activity saw participation from 11 employees and 48 job offer recipients, highlighting the group's commitment to environmental stewardship. In addition, Open House Group has collectively donated around 6 billion yen to community projects in Gunma Prefecture over the past four years, actively promoting regional collaboration. A notable initiative is their 100 million yen donation to the Kiryuu City project, reinforcing their dedication to local development.
Moreover, the repurposing of the closed Gunma Prefectural Kiryuu Minami High School site into a rental space named "KIRINAN BASE" serves as a hub for community interaction and aims to stimulate local economic activity. This experience and knowledge will be instrumental as Maeda Midori from the Sustainability Promotion Department of Open House Group contributes as a committee member.
Profile of Maeda Midori
Maeda Midori, manager of the Sustainability Promotion Department, brings a wealth of experience to her role having graduated from the University of Tokyo. Before joining Open House Group in 2022, she worked at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, focusing on recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Her background includes leading initiatives that utilize hometown tax systems for regional revitalization and managing the operations of various foundations.
Expressing her commitment, Maeda stated, "Through my involvement in public and community-focused projects, I endeavor to leverage my accumulated experience and knowledge to enhance the appeal of Gunma Insect Forest. I look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue through this committee."
What is Gunma Insect Forest?
Gunma Insect Forest is a unique experiential education facility that allows visitors to explore a recreated satoyama environment across 45 hectares, including groves, fields, and streams. This facility enables visitors to search for and observe insects in their natural habitats. The insect observation building designed by Tadao Ando showcases both local and global insect species. In addition, a greenhouse filled with subtropical plants allows close encounters with large butterflies, such as the Papilio garamas, while various programs, including craft workshops and hands-on experiences, foster a deep appreciation for the natural world.
