SPIRE Receives Approval from Florida Education Department
The Florida Department of Education recently announced the addition of SPIRE, developed by EPS Learning, to its list of approved reading intervention programs for K-3 students. This milestone highlights SPIRE's significance in addressing children's literacy needs across the state, marking it as one of only two ELA intervention programs sanctioned for use in all grades.
As previously highlighted in news reports from Palm Beach County, the program's successful integration has received commendations from educators and parents alike. A Palm Beach County teacher expressed the challenges educators face in finding effective, research-based materials to help struggling students catch up, stating that SPIRE effectively covers essential phonics foundations while integrating vocabulary and fluency components. This holistic approach makes it an ideal choice for learners who encounter difficulties in reading.
Steven Guttentag, the CEO of EPS Learning, emphasized the importance of a structured literacy strategy that fosters confidence and success in students as readers, regardless of their initial skill levels. He mentioned that SPIRE employs a hands-on, multisensory teaching technique, ensuring that both educators and students can take advantage of its intervention capabilities now that it's approved for K-3 classrooms throughout Florida.
SPIRE is specifically designed for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students, those in Special Education, ELL/ML programs, and students with dyslexia. Its foundation in the Orton-Gillingham approach offers systematic, explicit instruction through multisensory methods. This structured approach aids students in progressively developing their decoding and comprehension skills, enabling them to build foundational reading abilities effectively.
