SCORE Appoints Thomas U. Kim as Executive Director
On February 24, 2026, SCORE, known as the largest network of volunteer business mentors in the United States, introduced Thomas U. Kim as its new Executive Director. With a strong focus on fostering small business communities, Kim is set to steer the organization towards greater local impact through mentoring and strategic partnerships.
A Leader with Diverse Experience
Thomas Kim is not new to leadership. With more than two decades in high-level positions across nonprofit, governmental, and private sectors, he brings a wealth of experience to SCORE. His background includes serving as CEO, president, and chief operating officer of various national and regional nonprofits. Kim's record also showcases his ability to lead large-scale public sector reforms and enhance organizational effectiveness.
A decorated U.S. Army veteran, he is recognized for his talent in navigating complex challenges and driving sustainable growth. Julie Poland, Chair of SCORE’s Board, emphasized Kim’s blend of values and decisiveness, noting that his experience positions him as an excellent fit to lead SCORE into a new phase of growth and influence.
Commitment to Small Businesses
Kim's vision resonates deeply with SCORE’s mission. He remarked, "Entrepreneurship changed the trajectory of my family's life." Having witnessed his mother work tirelessly across multiple jobs before starting her enterprise, he understands the pivotal role small businesses play in providing stability and opportunities for community members. Kim believes that when entrepreneurs receive the right guidance and support, their chances of success dramatically increase, contributing significantly to job creation and economic growth in the U.S.
Enhancing SCORE's Impact
In his role, Kim aims to expand SCORE’s impact and outreach. He plans to enhance the organization’s operations, align national strategies with local implementations, and ensure that all 10,000 volunteer mentors provide valuable, expert advice to aspiring entrepreneurs throughout the nation. SCORE’s commitment to serving over 17 million entrepreneurs since its inception in 1964 gives Kim a solid foundation from which to advance. Each year, SCORE provides invaluable resources and education to help individuals start and grow their businesses.
Kim's credentials include an MBA and a Master of Social Work, along with executive education from the prestigious Wharton School of Business. Additionally, he is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, further underscoring his commitment to service and community wellbeing.
Community Support and Mentorship
As SCORE looks to the future under Kim’s leadership, the focus will remain on supporting local entrepreneurship. SCORE encourages individuals interested in starting or growing their businesses to leverage its resources. Potential mentors are also welcomed to join this meaningful community.
Kim’s appointment comes with optimism about expanding SCORE's reach and enhancing its mentorship programs across all 50 states and territories. The organization continues to be funded, in part, through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, reiterating its alignment with national goals for economic development.
