The First Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennale Enters Its Second Phase with New Art Installations Across the Emirate

The Commencement of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennale's Second Phase

The first-ever Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennale has officially launched its eagerly awaited second phase, with nine new art unveilings and installations featured across iconic locations in the emirate. Running until April 30, 2025, this event transforms Abu Dhabi into a vibrant celebration of art, culture, and community involvement.

A Celebration of Global and Local Talent

The biset features specific installations from over 70 artists hailing from the UAE and beyond. Highlights include fresh works from local and international artists like Tarik Kiswanson, Ayesha Hadhir, and Arquitectura Expandida. With 40 new commissioned artworks prominently displayed in the city centers of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Biennale reflects a rich tapestry of cultural perspectives and artistic expressions.

The recent weekend saw new contributions from various artists, including the Anga Art Collective and Rand Abdul Jabbar, among others. Each piece aims to engage with the public while exploring numerous themes related to the idea of 'public' within the unique cultural context of the emirate.

Routes to Explore

The Biennale comprises eight main routes that can be explored by foot or by car, including the Abu Dhabi Corniche Route and the Cultural Foundation Route. Each of these routes unveils a unique aspect of the emirate's artistic landscape, encouraging attendees to appreciate the seamless blend of environment and public space.

As part of the second phase, a series of public programs will activate various Biennale locations. Events include guided tours led by curators, lectures, and performances in partnership with local communities. For instance, the Abu Dhabi Bus Terminal, a notable modern heritage site in the city center, will serve as one of the key venues for these activities.

Community Involvement and Collaboration

Reem Fadda, the Director of Cultural Programming at DCT Abu Dhabi, expressed excitement about this milestone, noting that the artworks reveal a wide array of perspectives regarding public space and community interaction. The installations collectively investigate the nuanced relationships between environment, community, urban settings, and indigenous cultures, further defining what public space means in Abu Dhabi.

Clémence Bergal, the Director of Public Art Abu Dhabi, remarked that this initiative is a fundamental pillar in their broader commitment to fostering art in the emirate. The Biennale signifies ongoing efforts to integrate artistic engagement within society, ensuring art remains accessible to all. With over $35 million invested annually into the initiative, Abu Dhabi aims to leverage public art to enhance the cultural and social fabric of the emirate.

Upcoming Events and Engagements

The celebration of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennale will culminate in various interactive performances and programs facilitated by resident artists and community members in April, enhancing the spirit of collaboration and creativity.
