Sinopec's Cultural Initiative Bridges China and Egypt Through Youth Engagement

On October 26th, 2026, the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, hosted a significant event in Cairo: the final round and awards ceremony of the "In Search of China-Egypt Youth Cultural Ambassadors" competition. This initiative seeks to promote cultural exchanges between the two nations, recognizing the invaluable contributions of students in fostering mutual understanding. Seizing the opportunity, 30 students from various Egyptian universities were honored as Cultural Ambassadors, a symbol of hope for the burgeoning friendship between China and Egypt.

The journey began in July when the competition opened its doors to participants, garnering almost 100 original short video submissions from 12 universities across Egypt. These videos vividly portrayed the warmth and friendship that exists between the two countries, accompanied by the enthusiastic perspectives of Egyptian youth eager to engage with Chinese culture. The content provided insights into how young individuals perceive and appreciate each other's traditions and lifestyles.

Following a series of preliminary rounds, 30 contestants were selected to advance to the finals, with 16 competitors from six universities making the final cut. The competitive spirit was palpable as they faced off in three rigorous rounds, testing their knowledge through compulsory questions, buzzer rounds, and risk-taking queries. The excitement reached its peak when five students were awarded first prizes, earning them an exciting opportunity to visit Shanghai and Ningbo—two major cities in China.

Among the first-prize winners was Seifeldien Leisy, a third-year student at Cairo University who articulated the enriching experience of learning about each other’s languages and cultures. He emphasized that such knowledge fosters deeper understanding and promotes collaborative growth, expressing a strong desire to pursue studies and professional opportunities in China in the future. Leisy's ambitions reflect a broader sentiment shared by many young Egyptians: the aspiration to explore the depths of Chinese heritage and language, ultimately aiding in promoting friendship through these exchanges.

Lu Chunsheng, the minister counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, underscored the significance of the competition as both nations celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations. He encouraged the winners to share their stories about Sino-Egyptian cooperation and to act as conduits of friendship among their peers, ensuring the legacy of collaboration continues to flourish. The Embassy’s commitment to nurturing these crucial connections could lead to further opportunities for youth engagement in the coming years.

Rehab Mahmoud, the Egyptian director at the Confucius Institute of Cairo University, expressed her optimistic view on the increasing interest in learning the Chinese language among young Egyptians. She noted that proficiency in Chinese serves as a vital link that unites the two peoples. Her conviction lies in the potential of the ambassadors to amplify these cultural ties, enabling a broader circle of young people to experience Chinese traditions.

Complementing the competition, the event featured a vibrant China-Egypt cultural fair alongside interactive activities like quizzes and a themed photo booth. This set the stage for guests and attendees to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of both cultures, reinforcing the idea that cultural exchanges are not merely events but essential actions that foster understanding and cooperation.

Wei Dong, the chief representative of Sinopec's Africa Office, reiterated the company’s commitment to its brand promise: "Cleaner Energy, Better Life." He highlighted the company's dedication to creating more platforms for youth exchange and engagement, aiming to uphold and enhance the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Egypt.

In conclusion, Sinopec's cultural ambassador competition symbolizes a significant step toward strengthening ties between China and Egypt. By empowering youth to connect through camaraderie, understanding, and language learning, both countries are paving the way for a future enriched by collaboration and friendship. The echoes of this initiative will hopefully inspire more young individuals to explore, learn, and embrace the beautiful intricacies of each other's cultures.
