New Trends: Younger Adults and More Women Seeking Hair Loss Treatments Revealed

Growing Interest in Hair Loss Treatments Among Younger Adults

A recent survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) indicates a notable shift in the demographics of individuals seeking hair loss treatments. The findings reveal that a significant proportion of patients undergoing hair restoration procedures for the first time are under the age of 35, highlighting a growing awareness and need for effective solutions among younger adults.

Shifting Demographics

The 2024 data shows that a remarkable 95% of first-time hair restoration patients fall within the 20 to 35-year-old age range. This shift reflects not only a change in cosmetic preferences but also societal acceptance regarding addressing hair loss at an earlier age. Furthermore, there has been a substantial increase in the number of women seeking treatment for hair loss, with a striking 16.5% rise in female patients compared to 2021.

Dr. Ricardo Mejia, FISHRS, the president of ISHRS remarked, "People experiencing hair loss are no longer waiting until middle age to seek effective solutions from qualified professionals specializing in hair restoration. This proactive approach represents a significant attitude shift, indicating a desire for aesthetic appeal and self-confidence among younger demographics."

Rising Monthly Procedures

The survey also highlights an increase in the average number of hair restoration procedures performed by ISHRS members. Since 2021, the average patient per member has risen by 20%. On average, around 15 hair restoration procedures were performed monthly per ISHRS member in 2024, evidencing a consistent and practical engagement from certified professionals within the field. This number underscores the professional and ethical commitment of ISHRS members compared to illicit clinics operating in the black market.

Expanding Areas of Interest

While scalp hair restoration remains the most widely requested surgical procedure, there is growing interest in body hair restoration, including beard and eyebrow transplants. Among men, requests for procedures in areas outside the scalp increased to 18% in 2024, up from 13% in 2021. For women, the interest in body hair restoration procedures has similarly risen to 21% from 17% in the previous year, with eyebrow transplants being a significant trend, accounting for 12% of requests.

Attitudes Towards Hair Restoration

In a section of the survey regarding patient attitudes, nearly half of those pursuing hair restoration expressed willingness to discuss their surgeries, citing influencers for their decisions. The primary motivating factor, reported by 90% of members, was the desire to feel and look more attractive. Additionally, 63% identified the need to appear younger in a competitive job market as a key reason for seeking hair restoration treatments.

The Challenges of Black Market Clinics

However, the survey also brings attention to the growing concern surrounding black market hair restoration clinics. Dr. Mejia highlighted that complications arising from hair restoration procedures conducted in unauthorized clinics have surged globally. Such operations are often performed by unlicensed individuals, posing serious risks to patients. Alarmingly, 59% of ISHRS members reported the existence of black market clinics offering hair restoration services in their cities—a 51% increase since 2021.

The need for corrective procedures due to complications from black market treatments averages around 10%, compared to 6% in 2021, further emphasizing the critical importance of seeking treatment through reputable professionals.
