AgriCapture Partners with Google for Texas Water Stewardship

Rice is a staple crop globally, providing a substantial portion of daily calories to populations. However, its cultivation has a high water footprint, requiring around 170 gallons to produce just one pound of rice. In Texas alone, nearly 140,000 acres of the crop receive flood irrigation annually, particularly within the highly pressured Trinity River Basin. Recognizing this critical challenge, AgriCapture is working closely with local rice farmers to upgrade their irrigation systems. This transition will enhance water usage efficiency throughout the growing season, allowing farmers to repurpose continuous flooding methods.
The project leverages modern technology for measurement, utilizing flow meters, field sensors, and geospatial monitoring to track water savings. As the irrigation systems evolve, AgriCapture will quantify the annual water benefits achieved compared to the older flood irrigation practices, ensuring accurate reporting of improvements.
Google's involvement in the initiative goes beyond mere partnership; the company is providing the essential financial backing necessary for the overhaul of irrigation infrastructure. This investment not only includes upfront capital but also performance-based incentives. Essentially, farmers will receive financial benefits directly proportional to the water they manage to conserve.
