Empowering Youth Through Digital Skills: Huawei DigiTruck's Impact in Kenya
On March 17, 2025, the Huawei DigiTruck initiative held a remarkable graduation ceremony in Homa Bay, celebrating the significant achievement of 290 young individuals who successfully completed their digital skills training. This program, part of Huawei's TECH4ALL initiative, has provided invaluable training to these graduates over a comprehensive six-week course.
During this time, participants received hands-on education in essential digital skills such as computer literacy, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and cybersecurity. The goal of the program is to equip young people with the tools necessary to navigate the increasingly digital world confidently.
Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration of Kenya, emphasized the importance of digital skills in today's economy. He stated, "Digital skills are no longer optional—they are mandatory." This sentiment resonates deeply in a world where technology plays a pivotal role in business operations, remote work, and overall connectivity.
The DigiTruck itself is a mobile classroom equipped with solar power, workstations, and internet connectivity, making it possible to reach underserved communities. Since its launch in 2019, the DigiTruck program has impacted 6,030 young people across 36 counties in Kenya, with a strong focus on empowering women and girls through digital education. In the recent training session, 143 women and 147 men participated, showcasing the project's commitment to gender equality.
Adam Lane, Huawei's Director of Government Affairs and Policy, highlighted the initiative's role in complementing formal education through partnerships with universities and vocational training institutions across Kenya. "We aim to ensure that every young person, regardless of their background, has access to vital digital skills,” he said.
The DigiTruck program aligns with Kenya's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and Digital Superhighway Agenda, demonstrating a national commitment to eliminating the digital divide. The training included innovative challenges that encouraged participants to develop practical solutions to local issues, fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity.
Among the solutions proposed by the competition winners were projects aimed at enhancing healthcare service delivery and raising awareness about online safety and cybersecurity. Graduates of the DigiTruck program are expected to increase enrollment in ICT courses, drive digital entrepreneurship, and spur greater digital adoption within rural settings across Kenya.
As part of Huawei's broader TECH4ALL initiative, the DigiTruck program aims to expand its reach, having already mentored over 110,000 individuals across 20 countries by the end of 2024. By leveraging mobile classrooms, the initiative addresses the pressing need for digital skills training and awareness, particularly in regions lacking access to conventional education.
