Operation School Bell: A Lifeline for Students in Need Across America
A Lifeline for Students: Operation School Bell
Every year, Operation School Bell®, a project initiated by the Assistance League, transforms the lives of countless students by providing them with essential clothing and supplies. This initiative ensures that all children walk into classrooms feeling confident and ready to learn. In the 2025-2026 school year alone, over 464,000 children across the United States benefitted from this initiative, receiving not only clothes and shoes but also school supplies directly supporting their educational needs.
The Heart of Operation School Bell
Starting from an act of kindness in 1958, when a volunteer saw a child being sent home due to unsuitable clothing, Operation School Bell was founded with a mission to ensure that no child needs to experience such embarrassment. Volunteers across Assistance League chapters nationwide partner with local schools to identify students in need. Each child is escorted by a volunteer to select items according to their preferences, ensuring they receive what they need while experiencing dignity and respect.
“I'm immensely proud of all our chapters and volunteers who breathe life into Operation School Bell every year,” stated Judy Zulfiqar, National Assistance League's Executive Director. “They understand their local schools, their neighbors, and they work tirelessly to support every child.” The impact is visualized when a student walks into class adorned in new clothes and shoes, reinforcing their self-esteem and readiness to engage in learning.
Celebrating Meaningful Partnerships
A significant component of the Operation School Bell success story includes its partnerships, most notably with JCPenney. Over the years, JCPenney has played a pivotal role by organizing in-store and online shopping events aimed at welcoming students and their families in a nurturing retail environment, where choice and dignity are prioritized. Michelle Wlazlo, CEO of JCPenney, remarked, “At JCPenney, we believe that every child deserves the confidence that comes from being prepared and supported on their first school day. Our partnership with the Assistance League has allowed us to witness the tremendous difference Operation School Bell makes in communities.”
Additionally, Sikich, a new corporate supporter, contributed both financially and through hands-on initiatives. Their dedicated employees assembled over 1,400 hygiene kits, further ensuring that students have the tools necessary for a successful school year. “Our support for Operation School Bell showcases the collective impact we can create together,” highlighted Dimitri Wilder, Sikich’s Culture and Impact manager.
A Call to Action
For individuals motivated to make a difference, becoming a National Volunteer is a rewarding way to contribute. Joining the nationwide volunteer community or even starting a new chapter in one's own locality can magnify the mission of support and care. By promoting clothing drives and fundraising events, community members can assist in rousing further assistance aimed at essential school supplies and attire.
