A New Approach to Safety: The Designing Safety Program
In a world where unpredictability dominates, Japan is witnessing a surge in crime and disasters that challenge the very notion of safety. Amidst this backdrop, the
Future Creation Company, based in Minato, Tokyo, is collaborating with
UNITED RAVEN, a security and crisis management expert from Yokohama, to launch a groundbreaking program known as
Designing Safety. This initiative seeks to merge crime prevention and disaster preparedness, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of safety in modern society.
Why Designing Safety?
Historically viewed as a secure nation, Japan has encountered alarming incidents of violent crimes and disasters occurring at unexpected moments. The prevalence of such events highlights a stark reality: individuals must be prepared for the possibility of danger at any time. The Designing Safety program emerges from the need to cultivate the ability to think critically, judge calmly, and act decisively in times of crisis.
Unlike traditional programs, Designing Safety offers practical events and workshops that encourage participants to take ownership of their safety and security. Rather than merely imparting knowledge, the program emphasizes the importance of designing personal safety measures in daily life.
The Structure of Designing Safety
The core philosophy behind Designing Safety integrates crime prevention and disaster preparedness under a unified theme:
protecting lives. This innovative program redefines safety as an active process where individuals design their security measures rather than passively receiving them.
In light of the increasing incidence of random violence, injuries, and disasters fueled by social media, the need for a cohesive framework of actionable education has become evident. Designing Safety aims to equip individuals with the skills to recognize threats and respond appropriately, encapsulated in its foundational principles known as the
Five Guidelines for Safety.
These guidelines focus on developing habits that encompass not only reactive measures during crises but also proactive strategies such as observation, preparation, and recovery in everyday life. By addressing safety comprehensively, participants cultivate a mindset that enhances their resilience against threats.
Co-developed by both
UNITED RAVEN and the Future Creation Company, this program merges expert knowledge with experiential learning, presenting a practical alternative to conventional educational approaches. The goal of Designing Safety is to create a contemporary safety culture that is adaptable across personal, familial, community, educational, and corporate environments.
