Introduction
In the heart of Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, a commendable initiative called "Kodomo Furusato Bin" is making waves by linking donations through the hometown tax system with local marine resources. spearheaded by Nessu Inc., this program aims to enrich the meals served at local children's cafés and support single-parent families and children facing serious illnesses.
Project Overview
Started in August 2025, the Tsushima project of "Kodomo Furusato Bin" utilizes the rich marine life nurtured by the area's unique currents and seabed topography. By integrating these valuable resources through the hometown tax framework, essential food items are sent as "support gifts" to children's cafés nationwide. This initiative not only allows children to savor the bounty of the sea but also provides much-needed food support to those in disadvantaged situations.
In Tsushima, there exists an abundance of unutilized fish and seafood products that remain undistributed in the market. With this project, efforts are being made to repurpose these ingredients, not only educating children on the flavors of local fish but also instilling a sense of appreciation for fishing culture and food education.
Sustainability and Environmental Impact
The usage of unutilized fish directly contributes to bolstering the local fishing industry while fostering a sustainable ecosystem that minimizes waste. Many of the underutilized fish species found in Tsushima, such as Isuzumi and Aigo, which threaten seaweed beds (marine forests), play a significant role in this ecosystem. Activating the use of these fish contributes to both local environmental preservation and promotes a healthier marine habitat.
On November 8, 2025, in collaboration with the supportive efforts of Shinako's Outing Assistance, a children's café in Tsushima showcased dishes crafted using local Aigo products, marking a significant step in the project's outreach.
A Day with Tsushima's Flavor
During this enriching day for local children, they enjoyed a meal featuring curry rice and salad, complemented by a side dish prepared with Aigo, a local fish. The smiles on the children's faces highlighted the success of the event, serving as a heartwarming reminder of community bonds formed over food.
Parents and local residents gathered around the table, fostering intergenerational dialogue and reinforcing communal ties. Children expressed excitement, sharing remarks such as, "This is my first time eating Aigo!" and "It tastes just like meat!"
Excitingly, the initiative is set to expand, with another meal featuring Tsushima's marine delights scheduled for November 22, 2025, in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Continuing the Mission
The "Kodomo Furusato Bin" project aims to expand its reach across the nation, fostering connections between donors and community support for children’s food security. This endeavor not only nurtures children’s well-being but also amplifies local industries and food waste reduction efforts.
Since its inception in 2023, the program has received recognition, most notably the Consumer Affairs Agency Commissioner Award for Food Loss Reduction in Fiscal Year 2025. This accolade exemplifies the project's impactful approach to addressing food poverty and environmental challenges.
