Goodroom Launches Minerva University Residential Base in Tokyo
Goodroom, a subsidiary of Gooddays Holdings, is proud to announce the opening of 'goodroom residence Shinagawa Takanawa' in Tokyo, set to commence operations in September 2025. This transformed facility, located in the Minato Ward of Tokyo, will serve as the Japan base for Minerva University, an institution renowned for its rigorous global liberal arts program.
Transforming Spaces for Global Learning
The property, consisting of two former staff dormitories built over 60 years ago, was renovated in collaboration with Seibu Real Estate. Its renovation includes essential seismic retrofitting and aesthetic enhancements, ensuring the building is prepared for long-term use. The 'goodroom residence' will feature 93 compact yet comfortable units designed for functionality and privacy. Units range from shared rooms for two occupants to specialized universal rooms accessible for students with disabilities.
At just a nine-minute walk from Shinagawa Station, the location is strategically placed to become a hub for international activity and community engagement. It will accommodate 125 students from around the world, who will immerse themselves in the rich historical, cultural, and technological fabric of Japan. The facility is designed to foster collaboration and community, with shared spaces including kitchens, lounges, and areas for group work aligned with Minerva's curriculum.
The Innovative Minerva University
Minerva University is celebrated as one of the world's most innovative institutions, with an acceptance rate of less than 5%. Unlike traditional universities, Minerva does not have a fixed campus; rather, students travel across four continents within their four-year academic experience. They engage in rigorous virtual learning and real-world experiences that deepen their understanding of different cultures and societies.
With Japan added as a crucial locale in its global itinerary, students will be able to participate in immersive learning experiences, further bridging their academic pursuits with actual cultural contexts. They will be encouraged to partake in community events and interactive learning opportunities, significantly enhancing their educational journey.
A Vision for Community and Learning
According to Minerva University's Vice President for Global Learning, Dr. Dolly Davis, Japan's rich tapestry of innovation and culture uniquely positions it as a center for global learning. The university aims to cultivate meaningful relationships with local communities through the presence of its students, who are eager to engage and learn from their Japanese counterparts.
Goodroom’s CEO, Hiroyuki Okura, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting such an innovative university within their co-living space. He noted that Minerva's approach aligns perfectly with Goodroom's vision of providing light-footed, livable spaces that offer a blend of hotel comfort with residential ease. This collaboration marks a significant step towards innovative living arrangements in Japan and beyond.
In partnership with Seibu Real Estate, the old dormitory building has undergone extensive renovations, transforming it into a vibrant center for international students. Both parties see the potential for creating exciting new opportunities for collaboration between international students and the local community, which will enrich both sides.
Property Insights and Facilities
The renovation of the 2,900 square meter space has turned the once dilapidated structure into a modern, welcoming residential community for students. The design thoughtfully includes wide desk spaces, private single beds, and shared kitchen areas to encourage collective living and socializing.
Future enhancements may also feature amenities reflecting traditional Japanese culture, such as saunas and communal baths. This will ensure that students not only learn about Japanese traditions but also experience them firsthand.
Goodroom's Commitment to Innovative Living
Goodroom's commitment to transforming underutilized properties into co-living spaces is a key strategy in addressing Japan's housing challenges. With over 8,500 renovation projects completed, the company integrates its extensive knowledge of property management and community building to create desirable living environments.
With approximately 90% occupancy across 15 locations nationwide as of August 2025, Goodroom continues to advocate for versatile living that accommodates both short-term and long-term needs.
