Empowering Student Expression in Japan's 350,000 Dropout Era
As Japan faces a dramatic increase in school absenteeism, reaching over 350,000 students in recent years, the need for nurturing expressive abilities has never been more critical. NIJIN Academy, located in Ebisu, has responded to this need by launching a three-day summer school program titled "Let's Create a 3-Minute Musical in Three Days!" scheduled from
July 29 to July 31, 2026.
Addressing the Need for Safe Expression
The current educational landscape offers more choices, but many students still struggle to find a place where they can express themselves freely and safely. This program is not simply about learning singing and dancing; it focuses on collaborative creation, fostering self-discovery and personal growth.
During this immersive experience, students will sing, dance, act, and engage in dialogues, culminating in the collaborative creation of a musical. Rather than emphasizing the final product's perfection, the program values the journey of discovery through expression, helping students uncover hidden talents and fostering a sense of self-worth.
The Importance of Self-Expression
In this age of high absenteeism, it’s crucial that children understand their value beyond academic performance and social conformities. Parents often worry about their children’s futures, questioning if their child will succeed academically or socially. However, NIJIN Academy believes the essential truth to nurture is that one can flourish just by being themselves and feeling safe to express their thoughts and emotions.
The experience encourages children to express their feelings, embrace challenges, and laugh together, cultivating a safe space where every child can shine in their unique way.
Why Musical Theatre?
Musical theatre transcends mere performance; it’s a holistic art form where singing, dancing, and acting combine to convey powerful emotions and messages. In this context, children work collaboratively, sharing ideas and creating solutions rather than being handed answers. At NIJIN Academy, the goal is not only to enhance music and dance skills but also to instill courage, resilience, trust in peers, and self-belief.
The growth experienced throughout this process is far more valuable than the finished performance itself; it's a treasure that enriches each child's life.
What Makes NIJIN Academy Unique?
NIJIN Academy is more than just an alternative space for education; it aims to serve as a nurturing environment where children can discover their authentic ways of learning and living. During this summer school, students will engage in musical education that encourages creativity, thought, and expression instead of rote learning.
The school aims to empower children, ensuring they learn to navigate life using their unique strengths rather than conforming to a one-size-fits-all educational model.
A Message from the School Director
As a long-time educator, I have encountered many children and parents who feel lost due to school pressures. The anxiety about whether a child will meet societal expectations haunts many parents. But what I wish to convey is that every child possesses a unique and shining potential. Our goal is not to change the children but to provide a safe haven where they can discover their inherent strengths.
Children often reveal their true selves when they are in an accepting environment. One child I remember was initially withdrawn and could barely speak, but with time spent in a safe space, they began to express joy through singing, dancing, and ultimately shining on stage. It's not about change, but rather about the inherent qualities that come forth naturally.
Conclusion: The True Purpose of the Summer School
This summer school is not just about becoming skilled in singing and dancing but about experiencing the joy of self-expression and realizing, "I am enough just as I am." The hope is that these experiences will illuminate each child’s life, serving as a small yet profound light in their journey ahead.
