California Science Center Celebrates Milestone with Electron Rocket Installation

The California Science Center has reached an exciting new milestone in its ongoing development of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, marked by the installation of significant artifacts within the Kent Kresa Space Gallery. Among these artifacts, the Rocket Lab Electron launch vehicle stands out as a testament to the progress of aerospace innovation and a glimpse into future explorations of space.

On November 18, 2025, a ceremony celebrating this achievement took place, featuring the notable presence of California Science Center President and CEO, Jeffrey Rudolph, and major donor Kent Kresa, of the Kresa Family Foundation. The event signified not only the installation of the Electron rocket but also included a segment of a solid rocket booster, which will support a future immersive walkthrough experience, as well as a Space Shuttle main engine.

As part of the ambitious endeavor, the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center promises to be a pivotal institution within the California Science Center, showcasing over 100 artifacts tied to the rich history of aviation and space exploration. Guests will have the opportunity to engage with three main galleries: the Samuel Oschin Shuttle Gallery, the Korean Air Aviation Gallery, and the Kent Kresa Space Gallery. Each gallery will feature hands-on exhibits designed to educate and inspire visitors about aerodynamics, engineering principles, and the marvels of outer space.

The Kent Kresa Space Gallery, in particular, is designed to highlight the ways in which human ingenuity has driven technological advancement in the exploration of the cosmos. It offers a platform for guests to explore a variety of instruments, from telescopes that reach distant stars to space vehicles engineered to withstand the harsh environments of outer space. The Rocket Lab Electron launch vehicle not only serves as a centerpiece of the gallery but also exemplifies the growing role of the commercial space sector.

Jeffrey Rudolph expressed his enthusiasm about the completion of the installations, stating, “We are thrilled to celebrate the first artifacts installed in the future Kent Kresa Space Gallery, including the Rocket Lab Electron launch vehicle. This exciting artifact will inspire future generations of scientists, engineers, and explorers.” His remarks emphasized the role of such exhibits in providing educational inspiration to young minds.

Kent Kresa, a firm advocate for education and innovation, added his thoughts regarding Southern California's critical role in the aerospace industry. “From the Space Shuttle to the James Webb Space Telescope, we have learned so much from the technologies that have been developed here in the region. The Kent Kresa Space Gallery will not only be a place for learning but also a beacon for the young visitors who aspire to be part of scientific discoveries,” he noted.

This significant milestone was made possible through the generous support of numerous philanthropic contributions, including major donations from the Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Oschin Family Foundation and the State of California. To date, over 900 individuals, corporate entities, and foundations have contributed to the California Science Center Foundation, raising a remarkable $380 million towards the projected $450 million goal of the EndeavourLA Campaign.

The California Science Center began construction of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center in 2022, and progresses continue as major installations move forward. By early 2024, notable artifacts, including the full shuttle stack, are expected to be fully assembled and showcased within the galleries. This new facility will not only double the exhibition space within the science center but will also offer free admission to the public, allowing visitors of all ages to delve into the world of aeronautics and space.
