OBM and Revolution Mining Achieve CLR Qualification in Texas
In a significant achievement for the energy and mining sectors, OBM, renowned for its flexible load management solutions, has announced that Revolution Mining successfully qualified for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Controllable Load Resource (CLR) program. This milestone not only elevates OBM’s status as a leader in CLR integration technologies but also allows Revolution Mining to increase its power capacity significantly, by a staggering seven times.
A Breakthrough in Energy Agility
The CLR qualification represents a pivotal advancement in energy agility, particularly in the burgeoning sector of Bitcoin mining. Revolution Mining has managed to adhere to ERCOT's rigorous power grid control requirements, underscoring the success of a coordinated effort involving OBM's cutting-edge Foreman mine management software, Priority Power Management's grid systems, and Revolution Mining's tailored mining setups. This comprehensive technical integration marks a new chapter for the industry.
ERCOT's CLR initiative mandates that facilities like Revolution Mining's must respond swiftly to fluctuations in frequency, within a 15-second window, and adjust power demands every five minutes using linear load transitions. This degree of responsiveness is a substantial upgrade over traditional demand response programs, which don’t afford the same level of dynamic control.
According to Dan Lawrence, CEO of OBM, “CLR acts as a negative megawatt program, enhancing grid resilience and effectively amplifying generation capacity without necessitating the construction of new power plants.” Leveraging the capabilities of the Foreman platform, Revolution finds itself integrated into ERCOT’s dispatch queue alongside other generation resources, affording grid operators unparalleled oversight during crucial times.
Rigorous Testing and Validation Process
The path to qualification involved rigorous phases of testing, including essential Primary Frequency Response (PFR) assessments and live SCED validation, with ERCOT monitoring performance in real-time. Denoting the importance of this achievement, Lawrence commented on the testing’s rigor, noting that it demonstrated Foreman's capability to meet the most stringent grid control requirements. “This positions us well to assist other mining operations and data centers confronting similar scaling obstacles,” he added.
Unlocking New Growth Prospects
The CLR qualification is a game changer for Revolution Mining, as it effectively removes a significant barrier for expansion. Previously, Texas New Mexico Power (TNMP) had restricted the facility's power capacity to 2 megawatts until controllable load capabilities were proven. Now, thanks to the successful CLR qualification, TNMP has agreed to extend additional capacity, allowing Revolution Mining to unleash a further 13 megawatts, facilitating a significant seven-fold increase in operational capabilities.
Ed Nersessian, COO and co-founder of Revolution Mining, highlighted the impact, stating, “Our ability to pass ERCOT’s most stringent program provides us with the key to our growth, allowing us to leverage our track record in air-cooled hosting while branching into hydro mining with immersion cooling solutions on the horizon.”
The ability to demonstrate full ERCOT CLR qualification, multiple cooling strategies, and rapid scalability distinctly positions Revolution Mining for enduring success, potential strategic partnerships, and opportunities for acquisition within a consolidating market.
Collaborative Efforts Fueling Success
This achievement was made possible through meticulous teamwork among various stakeholders. OBM's development squad crafted tailor-made integration code, while Revolution Mining implemented specialized firmware and machinery, including Priority Power's Real-Time Automated Controller (RTAC), to ensure effective communication with the grid.
