Masterpieces of Craftsmanship: JAPAN SUI COLLECTION in Paris
From March 3 to 5, 2026, the Cabinet Office of Japan held the highly anticipated European debut of the
JAPAN SUI COLLECTION at the luxurious
Hotel Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris. The event drew an impressive audience, consisting of approximately 200 esteemed figures from various sectors, including business, culture, and creativity.
The Essence of 'Sui'
Launched in the autumn of 2025, the
JAPAN SUI COLLECTION embodies the concept of 'Sui,' which translates to a unique Japanese aesthetic characterized by refined elegance, spiritual clarity, and thoughtful restraint. This collection offers a remarkable glimpse into the traditional craft and cultural heritage of Japan through breathtaking artistry.
Impressive Craftsmanship
Attendees were particularly moved by the lacquer art showcased by
Kazumi Murose, with his
Lacquer Art Box and the stunning
Sendai Tansu Cabinet stealing the spotlight. Murose’s demonstrations included innovative techniques that merge traditional lacquer with genuine leather—a novel concept for the European market. The artist shared untold stories behind his creations, adding a personal touch that left a lasting impression far deeper than any brochure or photograph could convey.
Culinary Delights by Nobu Matsuhisa
On March 4, a bespoke dining experience curated by world-renowned chef
Nobu Matsuhisa was hosted at the hotel's restaurant,
DINING MATSUHISA PARIS. Attendees enjoyed premium ingredients meticulously flown in for the occasion, including
Kito yuzu citrus,
hoshigaki (sun-dried persimmons), and authentic
wagyu beef. Every dish was presented on elegant
mame-zara (miniature plates) from Japan, creating a feast for both the eyes and palate. The culinary experience was further enhanced by pairings of 16 varieties of Japanese sake, many of which were debuting in Europe, culminating with a traditional
matcha experience that transported guests to the serene landscapes of Kyoto.
Fusion of Art and Dance
The event also included a captivating fashion show inspired by traditional Japanese themes and a
Nihon Buyo performance, both carefully produced by
Junko Koshino. This captivating blend of heritage and contemporary artistry left the audience enthralled and eager for more.
Reception and Future Perspectives
During the reception, the interest in artisan works was palpable, with guests inquiring where to procure the lacquer-finished Sendai Tansu Cabinet and exploring ways to incorporate these masterpieces into their daily lives. The Cabinet Office views this event as a significant step in promoting Japan's traditional culture and gastronomy on a global stage. The overarching aim is to not only preserve these invaluable heritages but also to reinterpret them, making their relevance and value accessible to modern audiences worldwide.
