Swain's Opens Its Doors to Black and African Diaspora Art

In an unprecedented move, Swain's, the first auction house designed exclusively for Black and African diaspora artists, is set to make its debut on April 10, 2026. This landmark event will coincide with EXPO CHICAGO and marks a significant milestone in the art auction industry.

The inaugural auction, titled The Foundational Sale, will take place at the City Views Elevated Lounge in River North, Chicago. The opening will kick off at 4:00 PM Central Time, with live bidding starting at 5:00 PM. Those unable to attend in person can join the excitement online via swainsauction.com.

Swain's offers a carefully curated selection of 19 lots. Notably, it features esteemed artists whose works have found homes in prestigious institutions including Google, Merrill Lynch, and Deutsche Bank. The highlight of the auction will include significant pieces such as Guy Stanley Philoche’s Selfie (2026), along with works by museum-collectors like Genesis Tramaine and Bisa Butler.

As part of this groundbreaking initiative, McCollum Heritage 91, a wine label co-founded by NBA All-Star CJ McCollum, will serve as the official sponsor of the auction. Attendees will also witness a stellar lineup featuring GRAMMY Award-winning artist Zeph Farmby and D.C.-based mixed media artist Jabari Jefferson, among others.

The auction reflects a commitment to empowering Black and African diaspora art by correctly pricing it based on proprietary reparative pricing analytics. Swain's utilizes a dataset of over 75,000 historical records of artwork sales to inform its pricing, an essential tool for both collectors and artists.

Akilah Ensley, Partner and Executive Director of Swain's, expressed that the foundation of the auction house was laid because the market deserves a reliable institution. She emphasized, “April 10 is the moment that the institution goes live.” This sentiment is echoed throughout the art community, as many anticipate the positive ramifications this auction house will have on representation and pricing in the art market.

Among the works featuring prominently in the auction are the six masterworks from West African bronze tradition, indicating a blend of contemporary and traditional art. In addition, this unique setup allows for a comparative pricing model, giving buyers a true sense of the value of the artworks being auctioned. The buyer's premium is set at 15%, ensuring that the funds can support further initiatives and exhibition opportunities within the community.
