In an exciting new initiative, Sanrio, a beloved character brand, has teamed up with Honda to launch the SMILE RIDER PROJECT. This collaboration aims to foster smiles across generations while highlighting the appeal of motorcycles and motorsports, as well as the importance of traffic safety. The project is set to captivate both children and adults alike.
The essence of the SMILE RIDER PROJECT lies in its inclusive concept: 'Bringing smiles to everyone, from children to adults.' This initiative is a natural evolution of the successful partnership between Sanrio and Honda, where they previously showcased character-themed vehicles and related merchandise. By leveraging their respective strengths, the two companies aim to engage a wider audience and promote the excitement and safety surrounding motorcycles and motorsports.
One of the highlights of this initiative will take place on July 5, 2026, at the iconic Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture, where the '2026 FIM World Endurance Championship Coca-Cola Suzuka 8 Hours' will be held. This thrilling event will feature the participation of the 'SANRIO CHARACTERS × Honda Kumamoto Racing' team. In collaboration with the Suzuka City Board of Education and Traffic Safety Department, traffic safety T-shirts designed with Sanrio characters will be distributed to approximately 1,400 first-grade students across 28 elementary schools in the area.
By providing new opportunities for individuals who may not have had the chance to experience motorcycles and motorsports before, the SMILE RIDER PROJECT aims to create moments of joy and awareness through practical involvement. Sanrio's corporate vision revolves around connecting smiles globally, and through this project, they aim to spread happiness and positivity to as many people as possible.
The Honda Kumamoto Factory, where Honda’s domestic motorcycle production occurs, is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. As the home of the racing vehicle 'CBR1000RR-R FIREBLADE,' which is both developed and produced there, a dedicated team named 'Honda Ryokuyokai Kumamoto Racing' will lend their support to the project. A special color scheme featuring the character 'Kuromi' will be applied to the racing machine, along with additional merchandise like helmets and racing suits designed with characters such as 'Hello Kitty' and 'Pom Pom Purin.'
Furthermore, within the 'Honda RACING Gallery' located at the Suzuka Circuit Park, various collaboration vehicles featuring Sanrio characters will be on display. The gallery will not only host character meet-and-greets but will also offer exclusive collaboration merchandise for fans of both racing and Sanrio characters. This promises to be an engaging experience for everyone involved. You can find more details on their official website:

In addition to sharing the joy of motorsports, the project also emphasizes the importance of instilling traffic safety awareness among young children. Statistics reveal that 7-year-old children are particularly vulnerable to traffic accidents while walking. Hence, in conjunction with the Suzuka City authorities, Sanrio's characters and safety messages will be integrated into the traffic safety T-shirts distributed to first graders, with a school presentation ceremony scheduled for June 24, 2026.
Through initiatives like the SMILE RIDER PROJECT, Sanrio and Honda aim not only to engage with younger audiences but also to promote essential road safety awareness, ensuring a safer environment for future generations while keeping the spirit of fun alive.
