On August 4, Japan Home Shield Co., Ltd., a leading ground research company located in Sumida, Tokyo, hosted an engaging event titled "Discover the Wonders of Soil! Glowing Dirt Ball Workshop 2026". Designed for elementary school students and their parents, the event aimed to combine summer vacation activities with learning about sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the relationship between soil and everyday life.

Over the years, Japan Home Shield has taught more than 5,000 students through outreach programs at schools, emphasizing the importance of understanding soil. The event included educational sessions focused on soil and interactive activities, where participants created glowing dirt balls and deepened their appreciation of soil's vital role in our lives.

The Background and Purpose of the Event

Since 2014, Japan Home Shield has been offering a unique experience called "Mysterious Soil Experience Classroom (Glowing Dirt Ball Making)" aimed at young students. The initiative arose from the desire to reconnect children with soil, which they no longer interact with frequently due to modern lifestyle changes. The event was specially designed for summer, facilitating a fun parent-child activity while imparting lessons about disaster preparedness and the principles of the SDGs.

Educational Insights on Soil and SDGs

The event incorporated lessons on SDG goal number 11, which advocates for sustainable urban development. As schools increasingly integrate SDGs into their curricula, Japan Home Shield aimed to create a learning experience where participants could understand the relevance of land and soil in their surroundings. Knowledge of soil quality is crucial for safe construction, contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.

During the event, attendees learned that names of local geographic areas, such as "Nitta" or "Noda," often hint at the underlying soil conditions. Many participants were surprised to find their own neighborhoods reflected in the soil studies, recognizing that certain names can indicate the softness of the ground. Using the "Ground Support Map" web service, participants investigated soil characteristics and disaster risks in their areas. They learned about the potential dangers led by earthquakes and the phenomenon of liquefaction, where saturated soil loses its strength. Children actively participated in experiments to simulate earthquakes, learning first-hand how structures can tilt or sink in response to soil movement. Many children expressed amazement at seeing the results, solidifying their understanding of the connection between soil and safety.

Preparedness was also a theme of the event, with tips on how families can ensure safety during earthquakes: conducting school evacuation drills, securing furniture, and establishing designated meeting points in case of emergencies.

Meet the Educator: Kotaro Takechi

Kotaro Takechi, Group Leader at the Ground Technology Research Institute at Japan Home Shield, played a pivotal role in conducting the workshops. He joined the company as a fresh graduate in 2011, later transitioning to his current role after two years in the ground analysis department. As a certified ground quality judge and a visiting lecturer at Tokyo Polytechnic University, Takechi passionately shares his expertise with young learners to inspire the next generation about the significance of soil engineering in society.
