Shanghai Electric and Econergy Join Forces for Renewable Energy in Romania
On October 1, Shanghai Electric, a leading global provider of equipment and services in the electrical energy sector, reached a significant milestone by signing a contract with Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd. for the second phase of the 342 MW photovoltaic (PV) project in Parau, Romania. This ambitious initiative represents not only the company's fourth solar project in Romania but also underscores its steadfast commitment to advancing green energy development in Central and Eastern Europe.
A Step Towards Clean Energy Transition
The Parau Phase II project aims to provide clean energy to both private and commercial users upon its completion. According to Wu Lei, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Shanghai Electric Group, “We will continue to leverage our technological strengths in wind power, photovoltaics, and energy storage to drive the green transition across the region.” The project builds upon previously completed solar initiatives in Romania, enhancing the company's presence and influence in Central and Eastern Europe.
Econergy's Vice President of Operations, Andrea Loi, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “Our choice to collaborate with Shanghai Electric reflects our complete trust in their technical expertise, project execution capabilities, and extensive international experience.” The successful collaboration aims to ensure seamless progress and operational success for this landmark project.
Establishing a Strong Renewable Portfolio
This project follows the commissioning of Parau Phase I, which had a capacity of 91.4 MW and was completed under an EPC contract by Shanghai Electric. After receiving preliminary acceptance from the client in November 2024, Parau Phase I began supplying approximately 70,000 households with green electricity, effectively reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 6,800 tons annually.
In addition to the Parau Phase II project, Shanghai Electric's Romanian portfolio includes the 56 MW Schultu PV project, which was provisionally accepted in June this year, and the 60 MW EPC Ovidi project currently under construction. With these initiatives, the company's total installed capacity in Romania is expected to reach around 550 MW by October 2025, significantly contributing to the long-term development of clean energy in the country.
Enhancing International Collaboration
On the same day the contract was signed for the Parau Phase II project, Wu Lei also held discussions with Chen Feng, the Chinese Ambassador to Romania, and Istvan-Lorant Antal, Chairman of the Romanian Energy Committee. Antal remarked, “Romania is actively advancing the restructuring of its energy mix, especially in areas such as photovoltaics, energy storage, gas turbines, and electricity transmission and distribution.” He expressed a keen interest in deeper cooperation with prominent companies like Shanghai Electric to collaboratively develop renewable energy projects.
Furthermore, Wu Lei engaged with executives from the Austrian OMV Group to explore new cooperative opportunities in the region's energy sector, continuing to bolster Shanghai Electric's critical role in Romania's transition towards renewable energy.
Conclusion
Shanghai Electric's commitment to green energy and its collaborative efforts with Econergy herald a new chapter for clean energy projects in Romania. As the company continues to expand its renewable energy footprint in the region, it not only positions itself as a leader in the sector but also contributes to the broader goal of sustainable energy development across Central and Eastern Europe.
