EPRI Expands DCFlex Initiative to Europe



In a significant move towards improving energy efficiency and grid reliability, EPRI, a leading global non-profit organization in energy research and development, has launched its international DCFlex initiative, now branching into Europe. This initiative, which first took root in the United States, aims to explore how data centers can assist the power grid, optimize asset utilization, and enhance interconnectivity.

Launched initially in 2024, DCFlex focuses on innovative strategies that allow data centers and energy providers to achieve operational flexibility, streamline grid integration, and enable energy backup solutions. With the program's expansion into Europe, it now includes prominent participants such as RTE and Schneider Electric from France, ING from Amsterdam, and PPC Group from Athens, Greece, alongside founding members like Google, Meta, and NVIDIA.

A Growing Power Demand



The demand for electricity in Europe is experiencing unprecedented growth, particularly driven by the surge in data centers and advancements in artificial intelligence. According to a 2024 report from McKinsey & Company, energy consumption by data centers in Europe is projected to triple by 2030, escalating from 10 gigawatts (GW) to 35 GW. In specific regions like Ireland, data centers now account for over 20% of total electricity consumption.

This burgeoning demand necessitates immediate and innovative solutions to manage energy use effectively without compromising on reliability. Vasily Leonov, a senior analyst at McKinsey, highlighted the urgent need for industries to adapt quickly to sustainable practices as they face escalating electricity needs.

Implementing DCFlex Solutions



The DCFlex initiative will establish centers for flexibility in data management, demonstrating cutting-edge strategies for data centers and energy providers. These centers aim to foster operational and implementation flexibility, facilitate efficient grid integration, and transfer solutions related to backup power to grid assets. Demonstration implementations are scheduled to commence in the first half of 2025, with testing expected to continue until 2027.

Arshad Mansoor, President and CEO of EPRI, emphasized that Europe is witnessing a substantial increase in electricity demand, influenced by various factors such as data centers, increased electrification, and emerging AI technologies. He stated, "Flexible design and operation of data centers are pivotal strategies for accelerating AI development while minimizing costs and enhancing system reliability."

Collaboration Among Stakeholders



Several industry leaders have voiced their support for the initiative. Xavier Piechaczyk, Managing Director at RTE, remarked on the exponential growth of network connections required by hyperscalers in France, emphasizing the need for adaptation in electricity consumption to align with grid system constraints.

Caroline Golin, Global Director of Energy Market Development and Innovation at Google, sees this initiative as a generational opportunity for public and private sectors to collaborate in meeting energy demands responsibly and creating significant benefits for society, the economy, and the planet.

In a similar vein, Steve Carlini, VP and Principal Advocate for AI and Data Centers at Schneider Electric, noted that DCFlex represents a critical catalyst for progress in developing and testing new technologies, frameworks, and operational models. The collaboration between major data center operators, utility companies, and other stakeholders is absolutely vital for finding solutions to these challenges.

Georgios Stassis, CEO of PPC Group, pointed out the growing interconnectedness of energy and technology industries in the era of decentralized energy generation and is excited to be part of DCFlex, pushing forward Greece's energy and digital future.
