Celebrate a Decade of Art and Culture at the Gloucester Arts Festival This June

Celebrating Ten Years of Artistic Excellence

This June, the Gloucester Arts Festival will mark an impressive milestone: a decade of artistic celebration in Virginia's Middle Peninsula. Known for showcasing the phenomenal work of nationally recognized artists, the festival offers an array of events aimed at engaging the local community while fostering a deep appreciation for the arts.

Presented by The Cook Foundation, the theme for 2026 is "A Decade of Art," which sets the stage for a full month filled with diverse programming spread throughout the picturesque town of Gloucester. Attendees can look forward to everything from breathtaking Plein Air painting to vibrant concerts, making it an unmissable event on the cultural calendar.

The Heart of the Festival: Plein Air Week

One of the standout features of the Gloucester Arts Festival is Plein Air Week, which runs from June 5 to June 13. Throughout this week, invited artists from various regions will take to the great outdoors to capture the stunning landscapes, historic streets, and serene waterways of Gloucester. This live painting process invites visitors to explore the area, engage with artists, and witness their creative works come to life in real time.

Opening weekend on June 5-6 promises to be spectacular with three hallmark events:
  • - Brews, Brine & Wine at Machicomoco State Park, enjoying tempting local flavors while listening to live music.
  • - Paint Main in the historic district of Gloucester, where artists will create magic along Main Street.
  • - Symphony Under the Stars presented by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, offering a musical experience under the night sky.

Additionally, highlights during Plein Air Week will include the Mathews Paint Out on June 9 and the Patron Preview Party on June 11. The week will culminate in the Plein Air Invitational Gala Awards set for June 13 at the Fine Arts Museum of Gloucester. The fantastic works created during Plein Air Week will become part of the Heart of the River Collection, available for viewing and purchase at the museum from June 15 to June 27.

Beyond Plein Air Week: A Month of Engagement

The excitement does not end with Plein Air Week. Throughout the remainder of June, attendees can enjoy a lineup of events that promise to cater to a variety of interests. Some notable activities include:
  • - Arts at Abingdon Concert on June 18
  • - Book Fair on June 20
  • - Sport Star Screening on June 26
  • - A series of events on June 27, including the sculpture walk, Village Arts Day, and the It’s a Wrap Reception.

These events reflect the festival’s commitment to integrating art into everyday life, creating ample opportunities for community interactions with artists and cultural experiences.

A Testament to Community Spirit

Festival Director Shandie Covington expressed that this year’s celebration is both a moment of joy and reflection. "For ten years, the Gloucester Arts Festival has beautifully interconnected artists and audiences through shared experiences—this June, we warmly invite everyone to partake in this rich tradition."

With unwavering support from the Cook Foundation and Morgan Stanley, the festival aims to celebrate not only the past years of artistic endeavors but also to inspire future artistic pursuits in the region.
