Exploring 30 Years of Love in Heisei Era: Experience the Heisei Love Exhibition

Journey Through 30 Years of Love in the Heisei Era

The upcoming Heisei Love Exhibition is set to open its doors on April 7, showcasing an unprecedented collection of 3,000 items that reflect the evolution of romance over nearly three decades in Japan. The exhibition invites everyone familiar with the Heisei period to reminisce and connect with the various forms of love that flourished in this unique era.

This exhibition categorizes the Heisei era into three distinct phases: early, middle, and late. Each segment captures the emotional essence of romantic relationships through engaging displays and hands-on experiences. Visitors will find not only memories of their own youth but also an opportunity to experience the diverse narratives of 'Heisei love' that shaped a generation.

Immerse Yourself in Nostalgic Settings

The exhibition venue features meticulously recreated environments reminiscent of the Heisei period, including a classroom and a TSUTAYA rental store from the era. Within these nostalgic spaces, various gadgets and tokens of love such as pagers, exchanged diaries, flip phones, mini-discs, and photo albums from different times will be on display. Attendees can interact with many of these artifacts, allowing for a tactile appreciation of the communication devices that defined relationships during those years (Note: some exhibits will be for viewing only).

Interactive Experiences Await!

One of the exhibition's highlights is a series of hands-on challenges, including a pager speed-typing contest and the chance to make a call to a significant other using a landline phone. Visitors can also take selfies in a classic phone booth equipped with mirrors. In the later sections of the exhibition, guests can interact with smart phone screens that pay homage to recent Heisei romance trends, including fun face recognition stamps from apps like SNOW, consolidating an entire 30 years of love in one experience.

Expertise from the Creative Collective

The Heisei Love Exhibition is crafted in collaboration with Intangible Studio, a creative group known for its immersive experiences such as the 'That Staff Room' showcase, and the unique haunted house attraction at Tokyo Dome City. Utilizing their storytelling and spatial design expertise, they have successfully captured the 'atmosphere' of the Heisei era within the exhibition space.

Reliving After-School Memories with Frue's 'Heisei Purikura'

The exhibition also features a nostalgic shop filled with merchandise that will remind visitors of their youth. Toy collectibles and stationery from the Heisei era will be available, along with Frue's classic purikura machine, allowing guests to relive after-school memories. Original items inspired by flip phone screens, featuring 'new email check' and 'glittery wallpaper' themes, will also be available alongside collaboration goods from illustrator Aseino Bot.

Noshing Nostalgia at ‘Everyone’s Heisei Love Cafe’

After exploring the exhibits, visitors can continue the conversation about Heisei love at 'Everyone’s Heisei Love Cafe'. Unique content will be available for guests to write down their Heisei romance memories, immersing them further into the theme. Menu items such as 'Crepes from the After School Crepe Shop' and 'Tapioca from the Food Court' will evoke delicious memories from those carefree days.

Collaborating with NTT Docomo: A Fond Farewell to 3G Culture

In a special collaboration with NTT Docomo, the exhibition will commemorate the end of the 3G era on March 31, 2026, marking the conclusion of the beloved ‘galakee’ culture integral to Heisei romance. The official exhibition X page is currently inviting visitors to share their cherished memories and gratitude for the contributions of galakees to their romantic experiences, using hashtags like #HeiseiLoveExhibition #ThankYou3G #ThankYouiMode #ThankYouFOMA.
