On October 6, 2026, the Earth Island Institute revealed this year’s recipients of the esteemed Brower Youth Awards for Environmental Leadership. Aimed at recognizing outstanding young leaders, six exceptional individuals were honored for their innovative actions to support environmental movements across North America and beyond.
With this year marking its 27th edition, the Brower Youth Awards stands as the most prestigious environmental youth accolade in the United States. It strives to acknowledge and promote the impactful work of young environmentalists who inspire future generations. Meet the 2026 Brower Youth Award Winners
The following six individuals exemplify remarkable accomplishments in their environmental endeavors:
Esther Bonney, 19, La Plata, Maryland
Esther Bonney established the nonprofit Nurture Natives in 2022, aiming to foster biodiversity in the Chesapeake Bay area. Over the years, Nurture Natives has engaged more than 15,000 young people and facilitated the planting of over 3 million native seeds across more than 420 acres. Awards, including the 2024 Presidential Environmental Youth Award, highlight her commitment to community empowerment and ecosystem restoration.
Kaitlyn Culbert, 20, Toms River, New Jersey
Kaitlyn Culbert has dedicated her efforts to safeguarding pollinators. Her work includes publishing a study correlating native plants with healthier honeybee populations and advocating for legislative measures in New Jersey to promote native flora in state parks while eliminating harmful pesticides from federal lands.
Garrett Ordonez, 21, Los Angeles, California
As the founder of Hike for Habitats, Garrett Ordonez transforms recreational outdoor experiences into active conservation efforts. This initiative not only educates hikers about ecosystem preservation but also mobilizes them for hands-on restoration projects, significantly aiding recovery efforts after wildfires.
Maritza Sanchez, 21, Cuautlancingo, Puebla, Mexico
Growing up in a polluted environment, Maritza developed innovative microbial fuel cells to harness waste materials, generating electricity and improving local water quality. Her organization, Aquayac Energy, continues to refine and scale up this project to benefit energy-deprived households.
Ojas Sanghi, 21, Tucson, Arizona
Ojas is a co-leader of the Arizona Youth Climate Coalition, successfully spearheading a comprehensive climate action resolution for the Tucson Unified School District, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions. His initiatives are inspiring youth engagement and active participation in climate policy.
Renee Zhao, 19, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Renee’s work with the Canadian Youth Climate Action Team involved creating educational resources to make climate issues accessible for youth, reaching over 300,000 individuals globally. She organized the first-ever BC Students' Climate Policy Meeting, facilitating discussions with parliamentarians to advocate for necessary environmental changes.
Inspirational Impact of the Brower Youth Awards
The Brower Youth Awards program not only celebrates these exemplary individuals for their dedication to environmental stewardship but also nurtures the next generation of activists by providing them with leadership training, networking opportunities, and platforms to amplify their remarkable achievements. Since its inception in 2000, this initiative has lauded over 160 awardees for their contributions toward a sustainable future.
The award recipients will be celebrated at the upcoming 27th Annual Brower Youth Awards Ceremony on October 19 in Berkeley, California.
