Successful Short Film Screening Celebrating Youth Perspectives on China in Guangzhou

Fifth Annual Understanding China: "China in the Eyes of the Young"

The fifth edition of the Understanding China conference titled "China in the Eyes of the Young" took place on December 2, 2025, at the Yuexiu International Conference Center in Guangzhou. This international short video screening and award ceremony was co-hosted by the China Institute for Innovation Development Strategy along with Radio Television New Viewpoint, aiming to provide a vibrant platform for young creators to express their views about the evolving landscape of China and to strengthen cultural exchange.

This year's event attracted overwhelming participation, receiving over 900 submissions from across 25 provinces and autonomous regions within China, as well as from more than 15 countries including Argentina, India, Russia, and the United States. The remarkable diversity of entries showcased a wide range of themes and formats, brought to life by contributions from a mix of mainstream media, academic institutions, professional organizations, and independent creators.

Younger creators adeptly transformed the complex narratives surrounding Chinese modernization into relatable stories. This year's participants were not just passive observers but active storytellers, making broad societal themes accessible through their unique perspectives. The dynamic, multidimensional approaches employed by these storytellers further enriched the event's core mission, allowing for cross-cultural dialogues filled with depth and resonance.

During keynote speeches, presenters emphasized the importance of authentic storytelling during this age of global transformation. They highlighted both the obstacles and opportunities present in today's world, advocating for authenticity, empathy, and the embrace of technology in storytelling. Speakers remarked on how short videos and animations can help convey a more accurate representation of modern China to a global audience, merging tradition with innovation.

In addition to the awards and screenings, the event launched the "Understanding China New Youth View China – Explore Pu'er" project, which invites young creators to explore the beautiful landscapes and vibrant life of Pu'er. Participants were encouraged to capture authentic moments that highlight the city’s charm, thus fostering a deeper connection between China and the world through creative narratives.

The Understanding China Forum is set on enhancing cross-cultural understanding and promoting youth engagement in international dialogues. This initiative aligns with global efforts to foster mutual respect and appreciation among young people worldwide.
