Discover the Asakusa Hanamachi
The Asakusa neighborhood, located north of Senso-ji Temple, boasts one of Tokyo's most prestigious Hanamachi, or geisha districts, characterized by its rich tradition and long history that dates back to around 400 years ago, during the Edo period (1603-1868). Asakusa thrived as a bustling town in front of a major temple, attracting visitors who would come to worship or view kabuki performances. Here, the geisha emerged to entertain guests with their songs, dances, and shamisen playing, leading Asakusa to become a representation of Tokyo's geisha culture.
Even after suffering extensive damage from the Great Kanto Earthquake and the ravages of war, the Asakusa Hanamachi has stood resilient, overcoming significant challenges alongside the local community. With the love and support of many, including artists, scholars, and locals, this cultural district has preserved its arts while continuing to share the elegance and traditions of Edo culture with the world today.
