The Battery Workforce Challenge (BattChallenge), a prestigious competition focused on battery manufacturing and workforce development, recently concluded its year two rivalry in Indianapolis. Sponsored by Stellantis, this event attracted college students from across North America, showcasing their innovative skills in electric vehicle (EV) battery design.

Champions Crowned


The spotlight shone brightly on the teams from McMaster University and Mohawk College, who emerged as the champions of this year’s challenge. They were awarded first place for their impressive technical acumen. The runners-up included The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College, taking second place, while the team from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Ivy Tech Community College rounded out the top three.

Behind the Challenge


Initiated in 2023, BattChallenge has quickly established itself as a vital hub for engineering talent in the battery sector. The competition is a collaborative effort, managed by Argonne National Laboratory in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). With Stellantis as a key sponsor, students engage intimately with industry standards and practices—preparing them for future engineering roles.

During this year’s challenge, students were tasked with designing and developing a fully-fledged battery module integrated into a competition vehicle—a 2024 Ram ProMaster electric van provided by Stellantis. This not only tested their engineering skills but also required teamwork and innovative thinking.

The year’s finale took place at Ivy Tech Community College and the Battery Innovation Center over several days, encompassing workshops, trials, and evaluations. Aside from Stellantis, BattChallenge has garnered support from notable companies such as Samsung SDI America, American Battery Technology Company, and Eaton, among others. The BAMTChallenge serves as a crucial subprogram within the DOE’s broader Battery Workforce Challenge initiative, which focuses on regional training collaborations with vocational and community colleges and promotes STEM education. Through this, the program not only aims to equip students with technical skills but also endeavors to strengthen the domestic automotive industry’s workforce pipeline.
