Tokyo Tower Goes Dark for the 2025 Candle Night Event: A Call to Action for Sustainability

Tokyo Tower Goes Dark for the 2025 Candle Night Event

On June 20, 2025, Tokyo's iconic Zojoji Temple will be aglow with the warm light of candles as it hosts the 23rd annual "1 Million Candle Night" event, organized by Oisix La Daichi Co., Ltd.'s "Daichi wo Mamoru Kai." This year’s theme focuses on social action and sustainable living, inspiring attendees to share personal messages wrapped in candlelight, which will contribute to charitable donations.

This event, which coincides with the summer solstice, aims to raise awareness about environmental issues, poverty, and global challenges facing our planet. The slogan “Turn off the lights and enjoy a slow night” embodies the spirit of reflection, encouraging individuals to contemplate actions that benefit the Earth.

The Event’s Significance

The "1 Million Candle Night" initiative, launched in 2003, marks its 23rd anniversary this year. Its purpose is simple but profound—encouraging participants to turn off electric lights and spend two hours under candlelight to foster deeper thoughts about our world and its future. This transformative experience will take place at the foot of the Tokyo Tower, where, amidst the glow of over 1,690 candles, bastions of social action will unfold.

From June 16 to June 22 (Monday to Sunday), there will be a week-long call to action for everyone to power down their electric lights. On the evening of the event, participants will witness the dramatic illumination overshadowed by darkness, culminating in a countdown to a simultaneous power-off moment with not only the temple but also Tokyo Tower and various agreeing municipalities and organizations.

Event Overview

The event will feature a vibrant marketplace dubbed the "Candle Night Marche," showcasing around ten stalls that promote sustainable and environmentally friendly products, including organic foods from Oisix's offerings. Additionally, there will be workshops in collaboration with "WeSupport Family," aimed at providing food aid to single-parent households.

At 8 PM, to coincide with the power-off moment, Environment Deputy Minister Fumiaki Kobayashi will join a talk session themed "Considering the Future of the Earth." Following this discussion, a mini-concert featuring Candlenight Ambassador LiLiCo and other artists will further brighten the occasion.
