Celebrating Excellence in Hunter Education
On March 4, 2025, in a special ceremony, Anthony Imperato, the Founder and CEO of Henry Repeating Arms, recognized Ralf Hartmann for his significant contributions to the field of hunter education. Hartmann was honored as the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA) New York State Instructor of the Year, an accolade that reflects his dedication to promoting safe hunting and proper firearms handling practices.
The award, which is given to a select educator in each state who demonstrates exceptional commitment to hunter education, highlights Hartmann’s decade-long service, during which he has introduced more than a thousand students to the joy and responsibility of hunting. His efforts are not only aimed at the broader public but specifically include initiatives that make hunting education accessible to Amish and Mennonite communities, showcasing his linguistic skills in German.
A Journey Through Hunter Education
Nominated by Kelly Stang, a wildlife biologist and program administrator, Hartmann's recognition comes as a result of his tireless work in fostering safe hunting practices. His unique approach includes teaching tailored courses that meet the specific cultural needs of these communities. As an innovative educator, he has successfully recruited and trained Amish and Mennonite instructors, making it possible for these groups to participate in hunting education programs—highlighting the inclusivity of Hartmann’s vision.
Hartmann’s pathway into the world of hunting began with his father's influence, embedding in him the values of safety and respect for firearms from an early age. His formative years involved rigorous training, including a year of carrying an unloaded gun to instill discipline before he was permitted to hunt. In 1975, he achieved a German Hunting License after completing an intensive six-month course that covered a range of critical topics, culminating in a written and oral examination.
After receiving the IHEA Instructor of the Year award, Hartmann expressed a heartfelt dream: to hunt Red Stags or Chamois in Europe, which signifies his deep respect for the international traditions of hunting.
Recognition for Unwavering Commitment
Aside from honoring Hartmann, the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club acknowledged Imperato's ongoing commitment to hunter education and conservation. He received a Certificate of Appreciation and Honorary Life Membership, emphasizing Henry Repeating Arms' dedication to supporting educational initiatives in the hunting community.
Speaking on the impact Hartmann has made, Imperato remarked, “Henry Repeating Arms has always recognized the unsung heroes of the firearms industry—the instructors who dedicate their time and resources to teach the vital principles of firearms safety.” Expressing his pride, he congratulated Hartmann for being a well-deserved recipient of this honor.
Imperato's recognition of educators like Hartmann underscores the importance of responsible hunting practices in America and reflects the company's ongoing commitment to safety and education in the firearms industry.
