Innovative Circular Methanol and Hydrogen Plant Gets Green Light in Italy
In a groundbreaking development for renewable energy, MET Development (MAIRE), Eni, and Iren Ambiente have decided to forge ahead with the authorization process for an innovative facility designed to produce circular methanol and hydrogen. This plant will be situated at Eni's refinery located in Sannazzaro de' Burgondi in Pavia, Italy. The project leverages the advanced NX Circular™ technology developed by NEXTCHEM, which is part of MAIRE's technology segment.
This state-of-the-art facility aims to convert waste into synthesis gas, setting the stage for sustainable fuel and chemical production. Once operational, it is projected to transform around 200,000 tons of non-recyclable waste each year into high-quality synthesis gas, which will then be converted into circular methanol and hydrogen. Specifically, the plant is expected to generate up to 110,000 tons of circular methanol annually, a remarkable alternative aimed at decarbonizing the maritime sector, alongside 1,500 tons of hydrogen that will aid in both refinery processes and sustainable mobility solutions.
The partnership with Iren will facilitate the supply of waste through its management unit, Iren Ambiente, ensuring a steady influx of materials vital for the plant's operations. Moreover, the facility is engineered to recover 33,000 tons of inert granulate each year, destined for the cement industry, further driving the decarbonization agenda of multiple sectors. Notably, the circular methanol produced will fulfill the guidelines set forth in the EU Renewable Energy Directive for Recycled Carbon Fuels (RCF), showcasing its potential as a game-changing solution in the fight against carbon emissions.
Built upon existing infrastructure at the Sannazzaro site, the plant will take advantage of the wealth of technical knowledge present while simultaneously optimizing operational costs. Fabio Fritelli, Managing Director of NEXTCHEM, expressed that this initiative not only represents a significant environmental stride but also a means to catalyze economic growth. According to him, Italian ports could soon benefit from this environmentally friendly fuel, as global maritime regulations increasingly demand greener alternatives.
