Innovative Film-Type Perovskite Solar Cells to Transform School Rooftops in Japan

On April 1, 2025, a pioneering demonstration project for the installation of film-type perovskite solar cells will kick off atop the gymnasium roof of Kagawa Prefectural Kanonji First High School. This initiative is a joint effort led by Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd., represented by President Keita Kato, alongside Sekisui Solar Film Co., Ltd. (SSF), which specializes in the design, manufacturing, and sales of these innovative solar products.

Background of the Project


Japan aims to achieve a carbon-neutral society by 2050, with a significant push towards renewable energy sources. Solar power is recognized as a principal resource for this goal. However, Japan faces challenges due to its limited flat land area, which restricts the deployment of traditional silicon-based solar panels. The emergence of film-type perovskite solar cells offers a promising solution. These cells are light and flexible, allowing for installation in locations where conventional panels cannot be set up. Therefore, they present a crucial opportunity to increase the adoption of renewable energy in the country. Additionally, school gymnasiums are often utilized as emergency shelters during disasters, making the need for reliable electricity in these facilities particularly vital.

Demonstration Details


The project will focus on installing about 10 square meters of film-type perovskite solar cells on the south side of the gymnasium roof. The goals of the demonstration include evaluating the installation and construction methods, durability, and performance of electricity generation.
