In a major development for climate action, the Danish government has awarded a research license to Norne Thorning Storage ApS, a subsidiary of Fidelis New Energy, LLC, aimed at exploring the potential for CO2 emissions storage at the Thorning geological structure in Jutland. This initiative marks a pivotal point as Denmark seeks to bolster its decarbonization efforts and contribute to broader European Union climate goals.

The license was granted by Denmark's Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities, signaling confidence in the capabilities of Norne to undertake this critical work. The research program will focus on collecting vital information about the Thorning structure, including seismic surveys and test drilling, to assess its suitability for the safe and permanent storage of CO2 emissions. If these assessments are affirmative, CO2 storage operations could commence as early as 2030.

Norne will operate the research license in partnership with Nordsøfonden, an organization representing the Danish state. Should the data from the research prove optimistic, Norne and Nordsøfonden would acquire exclusive rights to apply for a CO2 storage license from the Danish Energy Agency (DEA), subject to regulatory approval.

Larsson Bo Christiansen, president of Norne’s climate department, emphasized the extensive planning invested in the research initiative. This includes aerial seismic sensor surveys with minimal environmental impact and comprehensive 3D seismic investigations, which are crucial for understanding the geological conditions necessary for safe storage.

Norne has been engaged in discussions with the Danish government and industry stakeholders to address the need for CO2 storage solutions as part of decarbonization efforts.
